Training videos? (Please be kind...)

Okay, so I know I'm asking for it here, but...

My past firearms training has consisted largely of mentoring (by former military personnel) and a single formal proficiency class. I've been shooting all manner of sidearms and long guns for the better part of 25 years, and feel I am a fair shot on the target range (I specify "target range" because I understand there is a big difference between the range and the street). I read everything I can get my hands on regarding firearms, from Ayoob to Gutmacher, to try to learn more.

I'd really like to get some training in defensive handgun tactics and skills, but I simply don't have the time or extra money to attend a class any time soon (maybe next year). In the meantime, I was wondering if it is worth looking into training videos like those offered by reputable training facilities such as Thunder Ranch? I know there is no substitute for face-to-face training, but I'm also thinking that any knowledge taught by a qualified instructor is a step in the right direction. I really avoid putting any stock into youtube videos on the matter, since you really have no idea who the person is teaching them, or if they are full of crap (which I'm sure most are).

Thoughts?

What kind of training are you looking for in the video's? Tactics? Presentation of firearm?

You may pick up a few pointers, maybe some corrections over what you're doing now, but overall, there's no one there to remedial you if you're still not performing some skill correctly, and you may never know it.

Tactics and general defensive handgun practices are mostly what I'm interested in. As I said, I consider myself a proficient "range shooter", and my borderline-OCD demands that I study every detail of my firearms and their manual of arms, but I have no practical training in the application of defensive handguns if faced with a threat. Without this training, I'm certain my reflex will be to fall back on my range-based handgun skills, which are probably not optimal for the task.

I've read every book that I can find on battlefield tactics written after the fact by soldiers that were there. Vast knowledge base that can be applied to everyday life with or without a firearm.

Yeah - I understand that it's not a substitute for f2f training, but I'm wondering if I'm going to get enough out of it to make it worthwhile. Sounds like there may not be too many opinions on the matter.

Yes, you will. You are pretty much a couple hours from great classes. Personally, I did prefer the class structure to start and pick and choose later preferred styles, over the one on one. Had both and got a lot from both. Video or in person, the most important part is having where to practice later. One class can take you a long way. This coming from someone who prefers the theorical learning (videos/books etc) first and going to class with some know-how and previous try-outs.. I did, and one day with someone knowledgeable got me way further than months of selfteaching. Not that I regret it as I had the time/interest/mindset and not the money, but it was MUCH better.

Anything by Clint Smith or Mike Janich would be useful to a point.

Personally, I'd rather spend that $$ on a couple hours of a good instructor's time...not all training has to be in group classes over a weekend. I only do 1 on 1 or small group stuff these days.
