You're going to the range, what's your routine if you're shooting pistol/s that day?

Stand on the line, shoot at 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 50,100 yrds?

What skills are you using? Full sight picture, flash sight picture, front sight press, QK pistol and at what distances are you using any of the above?

How many rounds do you normally shoot in one session?

Do you practice shooting two handed off hand? One handed off hand?

Do you shoot 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 rds a second and what distances are you using that number per second?

Do you practice your basics at distances past 25 yrds?

Just coming from the range with three of us Amigos and will come back to update this post after we finish lunch.

ETA: Ok, although I'd intended to return here after lunch and the trip home, there were several other items on the family schedule that had to be taken care of first. So here it is a day later before I remembered to return to this thread and respond to brownie's questions. Sorry about that, but here goes:

1. What's your routine if you're shooting pistol/s that day? Stand on the line, shoot at 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 50,100 yrds?
The target stands on the Pistol Range at the Palm Beach County Shooting Sports Complex are 5, 10, and 15 meters; there's no other variability on this range. This range period was spent in slow-fire concentrating on the fundamentals and then in repetitive two-hand and then one-hand presentation as I continue getting used to shooting with an optic on my new P365X-MACRO, currently a SIG Romeo ZERO. This thread reminded me of my goal to add more discipline to my pistol range trips, something like what edgehill's post #23 in your Threading the Needle with a Pistol thread.

2. What skills are you using? Full sight picture, flash sight picture, front sight press, QK pistol and at what distances are you using any of the above?
Not sure exactly what to call it since I was using the dot, but after a couple of mags in slow-fire concentrating on fundamentals, all from low-ready (since holster draws are not allowed), quickly putting the dot on the target and immediate trigger squeeze, first two-handed, then strong-side single-handed (didn't go to weak-hand today). However, I also shot two mags of .22LR from my Smith & Wesson M22A-1 with iron sights using full sight picture, which reminded me how difficult it is for my eyes to see the front sight!

3. How many rounds do you normally shoot in one session?
I didn't take specific notes, but I believe it was 8 mags of 17 rounds each of 9mm (136 rounds), plus 20 rounds of .22LR.

4. Do you practice shooting two handed off hand? One handed off hand?
Yes, but as noted above, one-handed was all strong side this session.

5. Do you shoot 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 rds a second and what distances are you using that number per second?
Range doesn't like a lot of rapid fire, but the RSOs don't squawk much unless it's excessive. Since I was concentrating more on the fundamentals this session, most of my shots were once every 1-2 seconds, but threw in a few double-taps, too and again, all at 5 meters.

6. Do you practice your basics at distances past 25 yrds?
Although there is a 25/50 meter handgun range at the outdoor PBSS/FWC facility, the Amigos haven't spent much, if any time on that range. I plan to investigate how best to utilize that range for shooting pistols at longer ranges on a future pistol range outing.

When @BeerHunter posed this question - "What is your normal range routine?" - at the post-range lunch (very important!), @Caleb answered without hesitation... disturbingly little hesitation.... "Make fun of Racer's shooting!"

This depends on if shooting pistols or rifles. The range i go to has a one hour time limit.

Shooting pistols I try to use quick kill most all of the time to practice the skill. I’ve been shooting with a friend that is getting into shooting and carrying so I let her shoot most of the time and I reload mags for her. When I shoot i start off at 7 yards or at 22 yards, the backstop and then work in reverse. Close to near or other way around depending on where i start. I like to vary it to start off. Short or long shots. I usually shoot my edc(s) as a general rule and any other range toys i bought. I always spend time with one hand, one hand off hand, two hand off hand. Close and far. Quick kill and also sights at 22 yards.

And yet when I make a useful suggestion, you block me. Go figure.

My range is right outside my door, so I don't have normal range trips. Every day I can do whatever I'm up for the day. Some days, I only fire one or two rounds to verify zero and proficiency before going out into the world. Sometimes, I'm down there for a solid hour just working on dry fire stuff. Lately, I have been doing 30-50 onesies out of the holster for speed and accuracy, at seven and twenty-five yards. It all depends on the day. I will say, however that I spend very little time and ammo practicing skills I'm already proficient at.

The only time I go to the open range is to function test either a new gun, or one I’ve been working on.

About all of my shooting is at IDPA practices or matches.

A usual practice will have me shooting 60-90 rounds. I’ll be shooting strong hand/weak hand, multiple shoot targets with no-shoots mixed in, moving targets, shooting while I’m moving, around cover, kneeling, lying down, shooting pairs and triples per target, tactical sequence, and tactical priority.

Occasionally we’ll shoot from inside and around/behind a van. Inside; we’ll shoot from behind the wheel, front passenger seat, and from the back seat; either out the open side door or out the front passenger window.

All shots under 10 yards are threat/focused unless there are non-threats (hostages). Those are sighted fire; HEAD SHOTS ONLY.

Practices usually run from 9:00-11:00.

My backyard range……
Half hip and zipper, 400 rounds a month
Only out to twenty yards

I do need more off hand shooting.

I don’t shoot rifles anymore, kinda lost interest.

Lol….. it’s a requirement!

I generally have a “plan” for that days range session. Sometimes it’s aimed fire, point shooting, shoulder, ect…ect. I do have to admit tho, I get bored of repetition so sometimes I change mid session.

I have no normal routine. I know this is a concealed carry forum, but that is far from my only range interest. Rifle, pistol, shotgun..then we have muzzleloading rifle, pistol and shotgun. Long range, short range, hunting practice, trap, skeet, 5 stand, sporting clays, 3-4 position rifle, high power, rimfire, and more. Just not enough days in the month.

why don't you give us an idea of what your pistol range trip entails.

This morning's range trip occurred in the basement. About a half-hour's dry fire in this 1/3 sized MSP target. The logo in the upper left is the equivalent of the black on a B-8 at eight yards. The four squares to the right are the zero targets, ten yards on the full-sized target. The head box is equivalent to a 3x5 card at seven feet. The torso boxes constitute the A-zone at seven feet. B and C zones are also on the torso. The squares at the across the lower part of the target are for dot torture work:

Fortunately, the range I belong to allows drawing from holster, and moving. I usually just pick something I want to work on, or a drill of interest. Some days I start close and move back, other days I start at 25-50 yards and move up. We have several IDPA barriers that I can hide behind along the way. 50 to 200 rounds depends on how my body is holding up. I’m relatively new to the Tallahassee area, and I’m growing board of practicing by myself. On the weekends the part of the range I can move on is reserved for matches. I’m still looking for a few retired folks to train with and keep me accountable.

I don’t shoot pistols much anymore these days. Kinda boring.
Guess I’ve come full circle and the only thing that really ‘thrills’ me is shooting Garands.
I go to the indoor pistol range sometimes and shoot 1-200rnds right handed, two handed and then left handed. I write with my left and have been carrying for 30yrs on my right. So a pistol feels exactly the same in either. Can’t draw so I ‘plink’ at different distances. Get a new gun and go shoot it a bit, wipe it down and put it away.
That’s about it.

The first thing I do is set up a target, draw my concealed g27 and empty it on the target.
Just as I would use it if my life was in danger.

Its piece of mind knowing that it works every time, and accurate.

Then I get down to the business of target shooting and what ever else I came to do...
