Moderators,

You jumped the gun on closing the thread titled, "This is the scarriest legislation that I have ever heard of." The poster was correct in stating that this bill [HR 45] does indeed exist. It is presently in the Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security of the House Judiciary Committee. I have no idea what chance it has to get out of committee, but you might just want to keep an eye on it. It requires anyone owning a handgun or semi-automatic detachable magazine rifle to have a license to own one of these firearms, said license to be issued by the Attorney General of the United States. There is a lot more in the bill including a requirement to obtain certified training before the license will be issued. You can read it for yourself by going to the link below [which is the Library of Congress website that allows access to all Congressional business including pending legislation] and searching by bill number HR 45.

http://thomas.loc.gov/

Always go to the source to verify information.

There is no provision in the bill to report your firearms on your 2009 tax return, but you might just want to read the fine print on this one.

Our gov't is worried about performance enhancing drugs in sports and yet they let morons like this congressman propose legislation. I think it's time they start investigating the mental capacities of their own!
At least from what I read he has no cosponsors.

Re: Snopes.

In this case Snopes is not incorrect. SB 2099 was introduced in 2000 and died in committee. HR 45 is an entirely new bill that was introduced in January of 2009, in the House, and is presently in committee. The OP in the previous thread has the two bills confused, probably because his primary source makes no distinction between them. HR 45 is available for reading on the Thomas website. As I said before, check the best source for confirmation whenever possible.

I believe we've discussed this bill in the past as well...it doesn't have a single co-sponsor, and has about a snowball's chance in hell of being enacted. Even the NRA says not to worry about it...for now.

OK.... but didn't we run this one down in the other thread???

As DED said there were no seconds???

Sorry if I got confused.. I've been up like 39 hours now.. If I was wrong, I'll re-open the thread, but I thought it was already put to bed... speaking of bed; I'll see y'all in the morning.....

PS I'll check this thread in the morning... apologies if I jumped the gun!

No need to reopen the previous thread. DED is correct that this legislation will probably never get out of committee. Legislation is not like a motion under parlimentary procedure. It does not require a second. The lack of co-sponsors simply means that no one in the House wants to publicly sign on to this bill. Though single sponsor bills don't usually survive a floor vote, especially if they have no concurrent legislation in the other house; sometimes they do. This is simply a reminder that the citizenry has to keep an eye on their elected officials.

I just wanted the opportunity to set the record straight. Thank you for your kind indulgence.

I'm new here and in an effort to try to get involved and contribute, I posted the previous thread. I am surprised that it only lasted 27 minutes before it was closed. The conversation and awareness that this thread have created, were my original intentions.

Don't take it personally...it's just that this topic was already discussed here less then a month ago. There's only so much conversation that can be generated about a bill that gets re-introduced every year but never gains any traction because it has no support from anyone other than its author.

Frankly, I'm glad you're aware of this stuff (as we all should be)...that's why it never gains any support. :thumsup

And don't worry...with the gasbags we have around here, you'll never want for a topic of conversation to contribute to. :laughing
