hi all,

I found this site while hammering google looking for shooting ranges and the best shops to go to in the north broward/south palm beach county area. While I'm new to shooting/CCW, I'm a quick learner and I love a good forum discussion, so hopefully everything works out well.

I'm taking my CCW class on Jan 10th and going to the FTL Gun Show the next day. Any tips on what to expect? Are prices at the show better/worse/the same as every day prices at the shops?

Thanks.

You may be able to get a good deal at a gun show but you need to know what you're talking about and be able to haggle.

Research what you want before you go. See what is how much it costs. Take notes with you. Try to find more than one dealer offering what you want and see if you can play one off of the other.

You'll have a five day waiting period so you won't be able to take it home that day. Make sure you get everything you are purchasing in writing on the receipt, preferably with model #'s. My GF went with me to a show where we purchased a shotgun with a hard case. When she went to pick it up they refused to give her the case. When we tried to back out of it they tried to charge her a restocking fee. (Weston Arms)

Hey flccnp, I'm actually taking my CCW class at Weston Arms on the 10th. Thanks for the heads up on making sure I get what I pay for. I've been researching a 92fs as well as a gun I can actually carry (I'll be posting questions in another thread), so I'll go in with some knowledge.

Thanks.

Welcome, Dan.

Things to look for at the shows are items that you don't see at your local shops. Re-loaded ammo, for example. Yesterday at the Orlando show, I saw plenty of that, and also picked up some low cost small pistol primers.

"At Weston Arms, we specialize in getting our customers their CWP in Ten (10) business days or less if you follow our specialized process!"

Ok, I saw it in writing and don't mean to get snarky about it but I don't believe one word of that promise. Someone will have to prove that to me.

It took me 110 days from start to finish (with a re-do of fingerprints).

Dan,

Somebody else has taken that class. They didn't get their license within the 10 days Weston claimed they would.
Yeah I figured that. i thin that comment was posted on their site before we "voted for change" and the run on permits began in earnest.

I spoke with the guy and asked what the time frame was. he said if I follow the system, I'm looking at 6 weeks. The guy behind the counter at the Bass Pro Shop said 14 weeks. Some guys in the office I manage have waited almost 90 days. So I don't expect anything to happen any time soon. That said, I'm getting my prints done electronically at the Sheriff's office and I'll have the whole app out the door ASAP. It is what it is.

Thanks for the welcome everyone.

Welcome Dan from North Port, be careful dealing with Weston Arms. Keep us updated as to how everything goes and I hope you enjoy the site. Be sure to let us know how the gun show was and what kind of deals you found and if you went home with anything new. And finally, GO GATORS
