I see what it is. People get a permit then walk about Wal-Mart with a gun on them.

This strikes me as a bit immature and like the kid who rushes out to buy cigarettes upon turning 18 for no other reason than "he can."

Coming from another state with better gun laws, carrying a gun is about as special as carrying keys. Carrying is really only impressive when done openly. A .380 in a holster under a jacket doesn't evoke the same looks as a GP100 hanging off the side.

If this is truly a right, people shouldn't feel so ecstatic about exercising it.

What you don't understand is that most of these people that are on here getting or have gotton there license are not from your state where carrying a handgun and keys are the same thing. while I have observed and commented on certain topics I get the feeling that a large majority of these people have not been exposed to guns and freedoms of shooting in there backyard when they want to like myself. I think that the excitement of this first carry is GREAT what better way for them to excercise there right to carry. And with this how many of their friends will they encourage to take a class on apply for their license. They more people that we have in this state carrying a firearm equals a larger voice in upcoming elections. :)

Ahh, but are your right really rights. In FL, you cannot carry openly (except in a narrow set of cercumstances). You can only legally carry concealed with approval of the government. Yet we are a "gun friendly" state.

I put forth that we have already given up our RIGHT to keep & BEAR arms. We have come to rely on asking the government's permission and approval to bear arms.

Anybody want to be the test case?

That's ok, I've been called worse.

I do understand where you are coming from. Not for one minute do I think anyone on this forum takes lightly anything related to firearms whether they are an experienced concealed carry or brand new to it all. Anyone who takes the time to do a search for a forum such as this site would put them in the category of being responsible in seeking out like-minded people who they can learn from. If anything it shows we are serious about being responsible gun owners and carriers.

As far as the Wally Walk it seems to have evolved as a way for us newbies to get out of the sheep world into the sheep dog world. For most of us who do not have a background in a vocation that would allow us training or practical hands on experience WW is the best we can do as we learn to acclimate ourselves into the world of concealed carry.

From this perspective it is not immature at all to be excited about carrying concealed for the first time. We all have to start somewhere. For us on this forum it seems that WW is our right of passage.

Hope this helps. If not then I guess I'm just immature.

Easy there, tiger...weren't you a little giddy and nervous the first time you drove a car? In both cases one is accepting responsibility for the safe operation of a dangerous device for the first time.

I understand where you're coming from, but open carry is just about the only thing we can't do in Florida. Give us a break, we're working on it. We still get to make fun of people in NJ and CA. :D

Carrying a firearm should not be done to impress anyone or evoke looks of any kind. Now who's being immature?

If this is truly a right, people shouldn't feel so ecstatic about exercising it.
On the other hand, perhaps we shouldn't take our rights for granted. ;)

I dont think that the purpose of the wally walk is to act like a bad : censored because you have a gun. As you are aware, florida is a CC state so carrying a gun at WW is not to show how cool you are. If done correctly, no one knows you are carrying. IMHO to me the WW walk was about getting comfortable carrying a gun in public. WW is usually a crowded place and even though I wear larger shirts than needed to hide my gun, there is always the concern that someone may notice you are carrying a gun and flip out and call the cops. So if you can go into a crowded place and not get "noticed" then it will help you to relax and not be paranoid that someone will call the Police stating there is a MWAG.

The goal behind the Wal-Mart Walk (WWW) is get the new CCW holder comfortable with carrying concealed. Walmart has a great cross section of customers and it's a great place to see if you can carry without being discovered.

This a Florida forum but the WWW is not a Florida thing. Check other firearms forums and you will see that this ritual is considered a right of passage all over the country.

No kidding! The first time you were allowed to drive the car some place solo was it to go drag racing or crusing the strip? Heck no. Still feels like a right of passage. For those (most of us) that never carried a gun in public prior to getting a permit it is a big deal. There is a lot of self conciousness and nerviousness invovled (although most of us guys will deny that). Walmart is the place because that is the generic universal (nation wide) public shopping experiance. Thus it is the ultimate validation of 'yes, I can actually carry a gun safely easily and with no one noticing.

I did my walk in Iowa. I already had a florida permit and had used it a time or two on vactions (Iowa does not honor that) and since Iowa was much more of a pain to get then it was a whole new 'right of passage' to finally be able to carry 'at home'.

my first time

when I 1st got my Fla ccw in 1999, I tried it out in a 7-11 in Pa, I didn't make it to a WW until last year in Delaware, I avoid WW to many bloody chinese products

some people in open carry states have problems open carrying and others don't in WW. I don't know about open carrying being immature, but most open carriers I do know are relatively new to carrying period. As a memebr and contributor at opencarry.org I hear alot of different views and opinions

and since its america we are allowed to make responsible comments

The wally world Walk is not only in florida it is done nationwide,I personally think its a great idea what better place to go and test how well you can conceal. So many people buy guns and don't do anything with them they wind up in a drawer or someone buys a safe and there it stays til they feel they need it.

The way i see it if you own a firearm you need to get training you need to learn how to use it,you need to get the feel of the firearm not just put it away til you need it. The wally world walk I would consider it to be a form of training not walking around in a crowded store feling like your rambo but being a responsible gun owner with a concealed license yep we could go on about open carry but it is a concealed license we are discussing.

when you get your drivers license what did you do? you went out to drive on the roads you had to get the practice didn't you. Smoking 357 i wish you well here just calm down lots of nice people here and willing to help each other we all have a main interest at heart lets all learn and share our interest together.

Well, not all of us on this forum are accustomed to carrying a Desert Eagle on our hip, openly or not. Though I came from an open carry state with shall issue CCW licensing, I rarely carried openly or concealed. The Wal-Mart walk is a great place to carry where it's accepted by the business, crowded as hell, and a good practice ground to gain comfort and confidence concealing and carrying concealed. There are plenty of things to do, and you can carry there without fear of getting a trespass warning if you print or are made.

It's a comfortable first place to carry, at a business that accepts legal carry. For those of us who had never carried concealed before, it's a great place to start.

As for coming from a state with better gun laws, you're welcome to move back anytime if you don't like our laws. In the meantime, "when in Rome" seems pretty applicable. There's nothing in our laws to prevent you carrying concealed something bigger than a 380. My next carry gun will be a 45. I currently carry a 9mm. If you're so obsessed with open carry, I suggest you move to WV. (My home state is extremely carry friendly.)

Bitching vehemently about our laws and antagonizing the Dept of Ag isn't likely to bring about the open carry change you seem to prefer. As gunowners, it's time to fight for our rights... but we need to do it in ways that don't give oursleves bad names. We need to pick our battles. Fighting the DOA isn't the place to start. We're better off saving the venom for the Brady bunch. They've got PLENTY waiting for us.
