Ok. Last Friday night my girlfriend and I were heading home when we got stopped by a red light in the turning area. Just before it goes green I hear police sirens. Look to my right (cross traffic)and see 3 cop cars in a full blown pursuit of an old Buick. We stay stopped to let them pass. The Buick cant get by some traffic and decides to jump the median.
At this point I'm thinking classic COPS episode until he jerks the wheel at the last second and comes within inches of hitting us and creams the curb, then continues on.
Now the question.
Lets just say he does hit us and after the impact he whips out a gun and you can see him right in front of you. Assume the cops would not be in the direct line of fire. What would you do?

: censored in my pants. :rolf:rolf

Seriously, with the cops in hot pursuit like that I would be very leery of pulling out my weapon. Good way to get shot by a confused LEO.

1. Say BAAAAA.

2. It sounds like a LEO op. If you are threatened, like you see a gun AND he is aiming at you or trying to take your car/girlfriend as hostage. Let 'er rip.

One of the most important things is you are mentally rehearsing this as a scenario. Good for you. AND you are making the rest of us think, hmmm what would I do?

Thank you

Think about this from another persprctive. You are a police office in hot pursuit. The car that you are chacing crashes into another car and bot end up close together. As you get out of your car, shots ring out from the crashed cars. What are you going to think and how are you going to react? What are the odds that that officer will open fire?

I would suggest against visibly displaying your firearm or shooting until the BG either shoots in the officer's direction or points the weapon at you. Either way, if you shoot, hit the deck quick. There will probably be incoming friendly fire. In fact, it might be a good idea to hit the deck anyway, just on general principles.

As stated before, I would not pull my gun unless directly threatened by the BG. I would if I can back my car as far from there as possible without causing an accident so the LEOs can have a clear shot. If he comes towards me to take the car or one of us then I would pull my gun wait till he is close to the car and shoot from inside. I would not step outside were the LEO can see my gun or confuse me with the BG. This way I am not interfeering with the LEO and I am only acting in clear self defense from my vehicle which according to Florida Law I can defend with deadly force if attacked. Once I open fire and hopefully hit my target I would stay low and in the vehicle till asked to come out by the LEO.

"Honey cup your hands over your ears" as my gun is drawn to the ready.

His actions then dictate mine. In the scenario/question, there's no indication when he whips out the gun if we are in danger or he's going to get into a gun battle with the pursuing unit's. If his attention/actions demonstrate his intent to engage the chase units, and my car is still operational and I have room, I may try to just get to hell out of the line of potential ensuing gunfire coming our way.

Brownie,

You just answered the man's question, with those phrases right there. :thumsup

I agree with Brownie. Get out of there first. Push wife into floorboard.

can't leave? I'd have my pistol unholstered and in hand, but would wait to see his intentions... If BG comes my way or points my way..."Honey, my spare mag is in the center console. Can you reach up and get it for me?"

Thank you to all of you that scenario was going through my head all weekend..

It definitely was a big wake up call for myself and my girlfriend. She always wondered why I take my gun with me every where we go. Now she feels a little more safer knowing I have it "just in case"

Do any of you switch hands as you alternately clear right-hand and left-hand corners? I tried that this weekend at the direction of an instructor. We determined it didn't work for me.

Mr. Buckley,

I have never done that. Switching your pistol to the weak hand while clearing a corner places you at a significant shooting disadvantage; unless you are truly ambidexterous and/or have extensive practice shooting weak hand. It does allow you to expose less of your body as you clear a corner. But, if your technique is reasonably good, then the trade-off is simply not worth it. The only time that I would do this is if I was going to shove the handgun around the corner and clear the area with gunfire, and then it would help to be reasonably sure what was around the corner to begin with.

Thank you. I believe that was the reasoning and the result. I also had no use for being disarmed while I changed hands. It didn't make much sense to me, but I keep an open mind when these guys train me.

Keeping an open mind concerning techniques is always a good idea. Unfortunately, what works well for one does not necessarily work well for another. Weak hand shooting, especially one-handed, should be part of your training regimen, however. In a combat situation, it is not impossible that your strong hand/arm may be disabled and you want to be reasonably proficient with your weak hand should that occur. Keep investigating and learning, it is a amazing what beneficial knowledge is out there.
