I have been thinking about which carry method I am going to use, and one thing is certain as I read peoples opinions and that is you end up with alot of holsters you don't use. I am thinking of getting a couple of types to cover different situations - a pocket holster, IWB and a fanny pack. I will be using these with a Walther PPS 9mm, anyone have brands they favor or opinions on this? It would be great if we had a well stocked holster store in the Orlando area to try them out.
Thanks,

Paul

Paul,

The holster section of the forum has 103 threads, and 1261 (now 1262) posts, with some great advice, and personal experiences relative to all the types and makes of holsters.

Take some time to read through some of those, particularly related to your holster leanings. It comes down to a personal favorite choice, and as you say, you may end up with a number of different types for different occasions and size of weapon.

You didn't list OWB in you post, but might want to consider starting with that type holster. I've got a Springfield XD-45C, which is a good sized weapon. I've tried it both IWB and OWB, and prefer the OWB for long wear, continued comfort. Just have to have a jacket or shirt to conceal the weapon.

As Brownie will point out, the deeper in hiding (tuckables, IWB) you put the weapon, the harder it is to access, and the longer it takes you to bring it to bear.

I have a fanny pack, but have hardly ever used it since I bought it at the CCW class. It's very obvious in what you're carrying when you have a black leather fanny pack hanging off your hip. Makes you a first target IMHO. Plus, again, the weapon is not as accessible as with a good OWB holster.

I shy away from pocket holsters because I prefer big bore guns, and they're usually a bit big to carry full time in a pocket.

Just some points.

Lots of good info in the Holster forum.

Little Bear is making me an OWB that I'm looking forward to posting pics of.

Good luck in your quest.

Fanny Pack

I have a fanny pack I rarely use but was purchased when I was on crutches. It is an Uncle Mikes knockoff from a Olympia, WA company but it served it's purpose. It just looked like I was a cripple using a sissy bag on crutches. I have worn it on trips w/ the kids and people look at it as I am carrying stuff for the kids: diapers, snacks, tissues, etc.

If you want to save money, try one of K&D Thunderbirds. I have one for my P7 and it is a GREAT OWB/IWB. I don't know if he is still doing it, but he was putting material on it to make it look like a denim loop. It is a great illusion...

If you go to Kevin's site, he has stocking dealers who may have one in stock to try on.

Good luck to ya!

Hi Paul,
I can't answer all your questions, but I have at least one IWB and OWB for each of my guns. I have pocket holsters for a J Frame, and my two small KTs, a P32 and P3AT.

I like the Hume 001 for my KTs, and I have a Wild Bill's pocket holster for my 642. I also have a Mika's pocket holster for a J frame, but altlhough you get a lot of bang for the buck, I find it too bulky.

My favorite IWB is Spark's Executives Companion, but his VM2 seems to be the most popular. I prefer the extra leather skirt which forms to the body, and prevents the muzzle of the holster from digging in. I am 5-10 and 174.

If you want an OWB Sparks I-BAK is my favorite of Sparks OWB holsters. However, Brommeland's Def-Con and Nossar's PNCK-H are at the very top of the group in my view.

It would be nice if one were to be able to borrow and try several holsters, but I don't know anyone, except me, who has some to try, and not for your gun.

Get quality, and you will never be sorry, but you may if you do not get the best.
In my view the absolute best that I have personal knowledge of are Brommeland, Nossar, Del Fatti, and Sparks. The quality just jumps out at you when you handle one of those. HBE has an excellent following, and may be in their class, but I have no personal knowledge.
John Ralston of http://www.5shotleather.com/owb.htm is evidently one of the best, but again I have no personal knowledge.

A problem is that you might have a long wait. I believe that Eric at HBE has a very reasonable waiting time, and you might take a hard look.

Regards,
Jerry

Much of this decision is dependent on what you will be carrying. A few pistols are small enough to carry in the pocket and , IMO, a holster specifically made for that particular weapon with a concealment flap (leather that protrudes above the grips) works best to hide the outline.

Larger weapons that are dimensionally bigger than the pocket require different holsters and which is best also needs to take in an individuals body type and dress habits. Someone wearing a sportscoat all day can use a shoulder rig or OTB holster without much problem. T shirts and jeans present a different need, etc.

Best to consider the weapons diminsions and the space you have available and choose with those factors in mind.

I have some very definitive feelings on holsters and I carry a Walther PPS. I carry OWB and without any question, prefer a vertical draw high rise holster. No FBI cant. Please consider the Sherrick High rise vertical or Kramer. I did not want to go through purchasing bigger pants for IWB and with a PPS, a OWB is non detectable with a jacket of tShirt untucked. OWB is so comfortable and vertical carry s much quicker imho.
