I remember when the XGI .308 started appearing in the gun magazines. What Ruger did was take the M-14 and scale it down into a .223/5.55 rifle when they created the Mini-14. Then they tried to scale it back up into a .308/7.62 rifle with the XGI...but apparently they didn't scale it back up quite enough.
It always cracks me up whenever someone on the Ruger forum says they wish Ruger made a Mini-14 in .308. There is one, but it's made by Springfield Armory. It's called an M1A.
