some of the threads I've been reading here have made up my mind for me. I was planning to start shopping around for my carry gun and eventually buy it in April/May when I got my permit. I wanted that feeling of walking into the shop, slapping my money down, and walking out with the gun. But with the way prices and availability seem to be getting, I guess I'll have to forego that wonderful feeling.

This Tuesday I'm getting out of work at 6PM and going to my range where I'll rent a few guns and try them out. Once my decision is made, I'll be heading to a gun show this coming weekend. If I find a decent price I'm buying it then. I'll wait the 5 days again, but I'll be da**ed if I'm going to sit by and watch the prices go up another $100 in the next 8 weeks.

I'll be firing the G26, G19, XD-9, and the M&P 9. One of those will do the trick, I think.

+1 on the Xd

Since it is my primary carry weapon, the grip safety, loaded chamber indicator, and relatively inexpensive price did it for me. All of your choices are great weapons, as i too looked at all of them but being a rookie cwl holder something about that grip safety just put me at ease a little bit more. Could not be happier with my decision with the XD Subcompact. Only have 300 rounds through it so far. No FTF's, easy to field strip, relatively accurate ( its not the gun its me ) and very concealable.

My buddy just got a Glock 19 and he is very happy with it also.

Thanks for chiming in, guys. I'm looking forward to firing them. My 40th Birthday is Thursday and my family is big on "Here's some cash, go buy yourself a gift." So I should have the funds this weekend.

Is the XD dual-action only?

My personal choice would be the G19. The XDs just feel goofy in my hand (yeah, one in every crowd, right?), but they are excellent weapons.

The guns you mention are extremely similar in function. It's going to come down to how each feels in your hand, which points more naturally for you, which one you feel you shoot better, and price.

You'll be well served and satisfied, I'm sure, with anything on that short list.

I love the glock and would always choose a glock but I own a M&P .40 and am pretty happy with it.

That is actually the best reason to pick one over the other: The way the gun fits you. If you get a choice pick, the gun you can handle and shoot the best.

Totally agree, Al. All else being equal, that's what makes my decision on a new firearm.

That's why I own what I own: Glocks, HiPowers, J-Frames, and now another 1911.:thumsup

I love my XD 40, but I have nothing against Glock at all, ive shot a few of their models, 19, 22 and they're just as good in my opinion. The nicest gun ive ever shot is an HK usp, but thats another subject lol

i think you cant go wrong with either brand, its all about whichever feels better for you, the grip angle is diff on the two so whichever aims more natural for you is the one you should get

A guy at work who owns the XD-9 said he'd go for the S&W M&P 9 if he had another shot at it. I'll see what I think tomorrow.

You all find the XD and the Glock 19 acceptable for concealed carry, right?

I think some of it is I have small hands and the interchangeable grips made a huge difference for me

personally, i dont think you can go wrong with choosing any of the ones you have listed... shoot em all enough and decide which feels right to you. If you get the right holster and a good belt, you can conceal almost any handgun

I carry and conceal a G17 [ larger than the 19 ] almost every day. Belt and holster make the difference as others have mentioned.

I see a lot of people spend 5-600 on a gun and cheap out on their holster and belt, then have problems with concealing the gun. Never made sense to me.

I conceal carry a Glock19 while walking, sitting, standing, cutting the lawn etc. you get the picture. It's very concealable. I have a choice to carry the Glock26 which is the sub-compact but prefer the G19 because the size of the grip is just right.
