An M16 or AR15 is not a battle rifle. It is by definition a combat carbine.

A battle rifle-Battle rifles are full-powered rifles, full-length, fully automatic or semi-automatic rifles that have been adopted by a nation's military.

A carbine-The AR-15 is a carbine. Despite the fact that the US Military classifies the similar M16 as a rifle since it mounts to the shoulder, the AR-15 fits the exact definition of a carbine. A carbine is a type of rifle that is lighter and easier to handle than other traditional options. Smaller caliber cartridge.

The best battle rifles of the 20th century were M-1Garands, M14’s, FNFALs. They were full length and full calibered. Some would argue the British Enfield, Springfield 03-a3, Mosin Nagant, Swiss K31 and Mauser 98 were the best. But I will look at the 2 types differently as one group is semi or full auto while the other was bolt action.

After using both carbines and battle rifles in a combat zone. There is a major difference with both having pros and cons.
Carbines Pros-Lighter weight, ammo weight, lighter recoil, accessory availability, faster firing capabilities, capacity, engagement speed.
Cons-Underpowered, dependability, durability, accuracy.
Battle Rifles Pros-dependability, sight radius, accuracy.
Cons- Heavy, capacity, ammo weight, accessories, slow handling, engagement speed.
When politicians decide what a combat soldier should use, it always goes downhill.

We found out in Afghanistan that it’s hard to engage an enemy at 800 meters with a carbine that is rated for 600 meter effective ranges.
Use the gun that you need for the job you need done.

It is extremely hard to focus on exacting terminology when our Commander-in-Chief thinks a 9mm can blow someone's lungs completely out of their body.

I will say, as an engineer and recipient of several US Patents, that "Yes" definitions do indeed matter.
But usually only to those who are paying attention and/or don't have an agenda of their own.

The M16/AR15 platform is a poodle shooter, designed for the ill trained spray and pray masses. In the hands of a trained shooter, however, they are effective. I can verify that a man can be hit center mass at 500 yards consistently. But the terminal ballistics at that range suck

500 yards?
I can help with that. :)

Well, maybe not the "consistently" part.

In Army basic; we only shot our ‘16’s to 300 meters; but I remember hearing back then that y’all (Marines) shot them to 500 meters. 👍

Originally a meter was 1/10,000,000th of the distance from the north pole to the equator. Then it became the length of a platinum bar that represented that fraction of pole-to-equator distance, (even though it had been calculated wrong and each meter was off by .008 inches). Today it is the distance traveled by a path of light in a vacuum in 1/ 299,792,458th of a second.

I think you have to have good reflexes and a pretty good watch to measure that.

Well, please don't tell any of the politician or the news channel writers about combat carbine's.
They'll have new key words to sensationalize their hate for our freedom.
assault rifle has gotten stale
