stop or release?

OK, as I've been wandering different sites as a lead up to my new addition (Glock 36, tomorrow! :dancingbanana) and I've come across an interesting debate on the proper handling of the fine Austrian firearm:

Is the little switch by your right thumb meant to be used to release the slide after a reload, or simply as a stop to keep the slide back after emptying the magazine? some out there adamantly insist that the only way to prevent damage to the piece is to reload the mag and then pull the slide back and reset it that way (the 'slingshot' method?).

thoughts, opinions, comments.....GO!

thanks all!

That "little switch" is called a slide stop. I've used it to release the slide on a first gen glock 17 since 1988, putting over 100K of ammo through it without having it damaged or need of being replaced.

Can it damage the slide stop using it to release the slide? You tell me based on what I just told you above. Opinions vary, but I don't know of anyone who has as many rounds through one glock than I do.

I've used the slide stop to release the slide to go to battery on all my glocks forever and a day. None have had to be replaced due to wear yet.
I don't have quite as many rounds through my Glocks as brownie, but I concur...you're going to have a tough time wearing out or breaking the slide stop using it as a slide release. :D
Just throwing this out there, but I have seen a friends Glock wear out that metal piece when using it as a slide release instead of the sling shot method (which I use on all my guns to be safe) it may not be needed as brownie said but I have seen the metal wear out first hand and the slide wouldnt lock back becase of the worn away metal. just an FYI
I use the slingshot method !

I use the slingshot method because I am lefty and the release is awkward to use with my trigger finger ! I cant see where it would hurt anything using it ! Thats what it is there for ! Kevin
