Found a new Sig 226 Elite for sale and put it on hold. It has the Nitron finish as opposed to the Sig 226 Elite Stainless model. QUESTION: how does the Nitron finish hold up? On the Sigforum some said it's ok and others said not so good. What to do? The Nitron finish makes the Sig about 8 oz. lighter than the all stainless Elite, but it still weights 34 oz. with the mag. It's a great looking piece, but I don't want to see the finish wearing off and ruining the good looks. A new member could really use some help. Thanks all.

I am not sure about the nitron finish but I have heard from at least 10 people that the quality of the sig bluing process lately has been questionable and that to prevent oxidizing you need to keep enough oil on the gun to see your fingerprint in it... which makes it a bit oily for carry... I personaly love the stainless guns and have as a carry when my ccw arrives a P232 ss

The Sig Nitron finish is pretty good but not as nice as some of the other coatings. It is not a bluing process where you have to worry about corrosion as such because the underlying parts of the frame are still alloy and the slide is still stainless steel. The weight difference comes from the frame of the Nitron models still being an alloy frame where the stainless is just that, stainless steel.

I have carried a 220 Carry Elite in Nitron for a couple years and am not seeing any problems with the Nitron finish wearing. Having previously carried a 220 ST in all stainless in a kydex holster that showed significant finish wear in the form of bright polished areas where the pistol contacted the holster during draw and reholster, I don't think you'll have any problems either way.

Those finish marks are a sign of a handgun that is used. They show character. Carry guns are going to show wear after a while. Just go pick up the 226 Elite in Nitron, you know you want to and it is a beautiful piece anyway.
