My grandfather who lives in New York called and asked me if I wanted his Browning BLR takedown 30-06 as it is getting to hard on his shoulders.

Just wondering does he have to do an FFL to FFL tranfer to me or can he do usps to FFL and that be legal?

Has any one shipped or recieved a rifle as a gift. what options do I have?

He can ship it directly to the FFL of your choosing. That covers federal law. I have no idea what NY state law may be.

From postal regs:
"432 Mailability
432.1 General
d. Unloaded rifles and shotguns may be mailed if the mailer fully complies with the Gun Control Act of 1968 (Public Law 90-618) and 18 U.S.C. 921. The mailer may be required to establish, by opening the parcel or by written certification, that the gun is unloaded and not excluded from mailing because of the restrictions in 431.2b and c.
432.2 PS Form 1508"

Rifle can be shipped from him to an ffl for pickup by you. You are actually buying the rifle from the ffl in Fla when you pick it up for his transfer fee [ even if there is no fee charged for the transfer, you still have to fill out the 4473 ].

I'd suggest shipping UPS and declaring value [ it's automatically insured for 100.00 ] and not shipping it USPS

Why not just visit Grampa and bring it home with you? He'd probably love to see you being that he thinks enough of you to give you his rifle.

When I pass my guns on to my grandkids, I'm gonna stipulate that they have to come visit to pick 'em up!:smack

Because they would both then be guilty of federal felonies.

If your grandfather likes to hunt, pop in for hunting season. Nothing makes you feel young again like getting up before dawn, driving out into the woods, slogging out to the old stand, sitting for hours in the cold, drinking lukewarm coffee and eating dry sandwiches, not being able to relieve yourself because as soon as you put down the rifle an eight pointer will trot up, snort at you and saunter off into the brush never to be seen again. Yes, the joy of the hunt makes a man feel young.:laughing

Better yet, have him come down in January so he can enjoy the warm weather and pleasant scenery. You can help him hunt the ever elusive "tall cool one"

Why?

Honest question. AFAIK I can drive into another state with a rifle I own. I have seen it when looking to go into Georgia for something. I can give a rifle I own to my kid as a gift. Why can't I combine them?

Grandpa has officially hung up his hunting hat... he just tells an ever growing list of stories..that all seem the same... except every time told... the deer get larger.... ran faster and was shot from even further away all without scopes that us young guys use to cheat:rolf

So let me get this.... He CAN go to fedex and ship direct to the FFL here correct?

Just wondering.....what is the final verdict..... should he ship FFL to FFL or direct to my FFL?
Your choice. Either is perfectly legal. Option B, direct to FFL, will probably be a bit cheaper.
