I know we discussed this over the years and my search skills aren’t turning up what I’m looking for. I know we had a thread...or two...on this and I believe the concensus was there was no benifit to using .357 out a a short 2ish” barrel? I believe the numbers were negligable for the .357 and the recoil was not worth the benifit if I recall correctly.

I have a S&W 640 all steel .357/.38 with a 2.125” barrel. Racer has the 642 Airweight .38 I think.

What says you on best self defense rounds for these two guns?

Would you bother shooting .357 out of this small a gun?

How do you like that Remora holster for it? Worth recommending?

You could try hornady 158XTP with 4.2 grains of IMR 700-X it burns fast work's well in my J-frames without bad recoil my pet load.

If I remember correctly .357 magnum has the best 1 shot to stop ratio.

Luckygunner has ballistics test data on a number of rounds tested in both short (~2”) barrels and long (~4”) barrels. Based on their test results I went with Winchester Ranger bonded +p 130 gr. I use it in both my wife’s Ruger lcr and our S&W Model 10 car gun. I think it is equivalent to a mid range 9mm, not the best 9mm round, but no slouch either.
