We picked up Mrs. Hodawg's PT709 Monday evening, and tonight was the first chance we had to take it to the range. Now, Mrs. Hodawg only last month expressed an interest in shooting / carrying again. She used to be able to kill a gnat at 7 yards with a S&W Model 36 Chiefs Special 5 shot .38. But she hasn't shot anything in 30 years. So this afternoon was anticipated to be an adventure.

The first night of ownership, we spent about an hour of going over the differences between revolver and semi-auto. We worked on sight picture, trigger pull, and operations of a semi-auto pistol. Fast forward..........onto the range this afternoon.

Let it be known that Mrs. Hodawg is now considered to be a NBK. After the first 3 rounds to get used to the recoil, her groups were outstanding! Now, we were only shooting at 15 feet (the normal SD distance), but her performance was dead on! We quickly both figured out that the PT709's groupings were a little low, but they were consistent. THAT we can correct with rear sight adjustments.

She had a great time, and want's to go again as soon as possible. She's getting into it again. After her first 20 rounds, I introduced her to the Weaver Stance, and she loved it! Her 10 ring hits jumped dramatically.

I'm almost ashamed to hang her target next to mine!

Beers y'all,
Ken

Oh yeah, I almost forgot. The 709......, Flawless! through the first 100 rounds. No FTE's, FTF's, nothing. After my 50 rounds through the 709 I'm convinced that this may soon be my EDC. Ain't getting rid of the G19, but I may have found the most accurate, reliable, and concealable weapon I've ever put my hands on. However, the road test is not over yet, so I reserve the option to back up and re-evaluate if need be.

Congrats on Mrs. Hodawg performance.

I believe operating as a team with your SO gives you a significant edge in a SHTF scenario.
Let me share one of our procedures: if we call each other by our middle name, it means "alert condition RED".

Have fun !!!

Ken,

I'm right there with you. My wife's 709 has been flawless, too. The groups she's shooting are ragged holes in the targets from overlapping holes tearing out the paper. I've only shot maybe 25 rounds myself, but I like it enough I'm seriously considering going shopping for a second one. I love my XDm, but this is one sweet little gun.

My wife loved the 709, and we have been waiting for some feedback on that model. I would like it, but I'm left handed and the safety is not ambidextrious:thumbsdwn

She also really liked the Smith 642 with crimson trace. She said she couldn't decide what to get, so I told her she should get both.:laughing

Nice to hear a positive report on that piece..Is it small enough for pocket carry?

Congrats to you and Mrs. H..

:drinks
Possible, I could. Maybe not every pair of pants, but for the most part it would be possible.

Need a pocket holster though, it is single action with thumb safety. It would be bad to drop the keys in the wrong pocket with a SA autoloader in the pocket:eek::eek::eek:

It is classified as a SA, but from everything I've read and experienced with this handgun, it really is no different than a Glock as far as the USER goes. Don't want it to go bang, keep the "booger hook off the bang switch". It's passive safeties are almost identical to a Glock, with the added safety of those who think they need it of a conventional slide safety. In addition, the "keyed" safety on the slide for when young'uns are around makes this one sweet piece.

As soon as I can dump my Taurus .357 model 606 2" stainless, I'm buying another PT709. Any takers? I'll make you a heck of a good deal!

The one thing that's different from a conventional Glock is that you have a second strike capability. If a round doesn't go BANG, you can just squeeze the trigger again and the hammer or striker or whatever will come down again without racking the slide and ejecting the round. They say this is usually all you need to do, although my one and only dud round wouldn't go bang no matter how many times I hit it. .

Just got back from running another box of 50 or so through it. The gun continues flawless and fun to shoot.
