I have a friend that wants to trade a SKS rifles for a exhaust system. He says it a russian made semi auto chambered for 7.62 with a 10 power scope.

#1 What do you guys think about this rifles?
#3 How available is the ammo?
#4 How expensive is the ammo?
#5 How does it compare to a 223/556 round?
#6 What is the going amount for the rifle?

PS I know nothing about rifles so any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks FB :popcorn

if it is the real Russian made, that's the nicest of the SKS'. i'm no expert by any means, but the SKS is one of my favorite rifles! ammo isn't too hard to find and its not overly expensive. i'd say middle of the road average price. the 7.62x39 is a blast to shoot! i'd much rather shoot a 7.62 than a .223/ 5.56 nato. as far as price, there is several Yuko made SKS' for sale here in Gainesville and they start at $279 and go as high as $379 for the great condition ones. the Russian SKS usually bring a little more money than the Yugos. of course it all depends on condition. i'd say get it, you'll enjoy shooting the heck out of it!:ak:thumsup

If it's russian it likely has a star stamped on the bolt cover, but if he put a scope on it, he may have replaced the cover to do that. I'd look for the markings on the receiver, if it says Norinco, it's probably chinese made, not Russian.

Do a gunsamerica or gunbroker search for russian sks's and see what they are going for. I've seen them as high as 550.00 for new or like new and as low as 375.00

The Sks is a great battle rifle. I use a Norinco for rifle training out here quite often and it can hit out to 300 yds all day. They are reliable, fairly accurate and robust rifles. Parts availability isn't too difficult at the moment, the ammo can be obtained fairly easily right now but in the past it has been sporadic at times.

Wow as high as $55.00 where can I get in on that action! :rolf (just messing)

The Russian SKS is the better model (IMO). They tend to be better constructed and more accurate, the East German are also good to get if you can find one. I picked up my Russian SKS for $380 back in Dec '08. The ammo is out there, just not as cheap as it used to be (about $.32/rd). Pick up a couple cans of it (surplus 420 rds ea.) and you'll be in for good times.
Some Yugos tend to have some problems because of the gas system and "grenade launcher". :ak

right now southern ohio gun (distributer) is selling yugo sks for 250.00 and romanian sks for 350.00 in excellent to new condition. just to give you a idea of what the distributers are selling them for. you have to have a ffl license to buy from them.
550.00 that is way overpriced some people are trying to cash in on the after election craziness. not too long ago they were going for 200.00 dollars

here is some rifle history and operation info.

they are fun to shoot and if you miss the target you can always charge it with the bayonet.

Norinco's are running 450.00-500.00 on gunsamerica presently in like new condition.

Yugo's around 320-340.00

Russian sks on there for 700.00 with a scope on it and aftermarket stock

Romanians running 650.00 or so

They're all moving up in price very quickly from what I'm seeing compared to just a year or two ago. Get em while you can if you think you want one some day, they're not bringing them into the country anymore.

I own 6 of them presently:

2 Russian
4 Norincos

The Russians are collectors, the 1 Norc for training and the other three as spare parts guns [ parts are getting hard to get for these guns lately ].

Agreed, I own both a Chinese and a Russian 1950. A real blast to shoot, the chinese is just as accurate and it's a paratrooper. The Russian you can clearly see is better made. The Russian models are any where from 350 - 600. Three local gun stores have Norinco's "never fired" with after market Tapco stocks selling for over 500.00. I travel all over the east coast of Florida for my job and the Russian is consistently 500.00 or more in gunshops. If needed you could easily sell your Russian for the 3-400 you would like to get for the exhaust. Congrats on the SKS ;)

Heat issues

I have a Norinco SKS with original furniture and bayonet. Very nice rifle, but it gets hotter than h#ll after about 70 rounds. Is it worth modifying it with assault type hardware for large volume firing or would I be better served with another type of weapon, like an AK? (I like the price of the AK's and the ammo vs AR's)

i managed to pick up a Norinco with the synthetic monte carlo stock for $200 from a friend of a guy i work with. talk about a deal! this thing is a great shooter! i replaced the crappy plastic 30rd mags with an original fixed 10 rd box mag and stripper clips. so much faster to reload with the stripper clips!

xbonz- my norinco with the monte carlo syn stock doesnt get super hot. i put about 100 rds through it in rapid fire and it was cool enough to keep shooting more. the monte carlo stock can be purchased for like 60 bucks, so its not a large investment, or tapco makes a tactical one in the 90 dollar range. i have seen some sks' that had to be trimmed around the mag opening to accept the 20rd tapco mag with a synthetic stock, but its not a big job at all. of course though, AKs are just as much fun to shoot as an SKS. i enjoy shooting my SKS more than my friends AK, simply b/c when i'm shooting the AK all i want to do is empty the mag as fast as i can!! at least with my SKS i enjoy sighting in the target and trying to hit COM.

Thanks for the info.. My rifle gets hot enough to need welding gloves to hold it.(OK, a little exaggeration) Not sure if it's the wood or if something is wrong with the barrel. I'll have to try the synthetic stock see if it helps..

I also use the stripper clips. Was advised against going to mags by Brownie..

The Russian ones are nice rifles and are not cheap. If it's a real Russian SKS, then definitely go for it and DO NOT modify it.

The only exception to this is if you are lucky enough to find a Chinese 20 round FIXED magazine (they have a ChiCom star on the side of them.) Those are great but are pretty darn rare.
