so, i visited my wife at work today, and her place of work requires i leave the piece in the car. i got back to the car, and it was really hot in there! my question is...does there come a point when there is a risk of discharge because of the heat? i thought it would be really bad (not to mention a little embarrassing) to have 15 rounds going off in my glove box while i'm inside.... :doh

I leave a 30-30 on the back seat under a blanket and a j frame 38 under a towel on the hump of the truck all summer. In the heat of the summer, the truck can get to 140-150+ degrees and be that way all day.

It's not a problem :thumsup

Unless you're parked on the equator, it's not an issue.

The interior of a car cannot reach an ambient temperature high enough to cook off a round.

I've had 1 or more guns in my car all day, every day for eons....no issues.

thank you for posting the question. I keep my gun in my truck at work and often thought about the same thing. Good to know.

On the same subject, can repeated exposures to such heat damage polymer guns?
Well....one of the guns bouncing around in my car for the last 18 years has been the same G23....still works just fine.

I've been wondering this myself. I'd like to keep my .380 in the car at all times. I've been taking it out if the car sat in the sun.
I measured the heat in my car & in my parking lot on an Aug sunny day the temp got to 163.

Will anything warp? Will ammo swell?

Unless you keep your gun loaded with cans of biscuit dough, I think you'll be OK. :rolf

I have kept a handgun in my console for years. I have a black truck that gets extremely hot and have not had a problem with any discharge nor damage to the handguns themself. I keep a 380 in there now and before that a 9mm, I think you should be safe.

Myth Busters

I watched one of the mythbusterz shows where they put bullets in an oven and heated it up until the cartridge fired.

It took 400 degrees to detonate the cartridge.

When the bullet was not in a gun, it could not get out of the oven, but when in a gun chamber, it easily shot right through the oven door glass.

Sounds like no problem unless you add propane to your interior.

I constantly have extra ammo, mags, and extra guns in my car. I never know when I will be heading to the range on a whim. You still have to prepare for whims you know?

Never had an issue.

I was worried about my Crimson Trace grips in the extreme heat all day when I am in work and called them and they say the only problem is the batteries life will be greatly reduced.

I try to park in the shade, but most of the time my Smith snubbie is pretty hot when I get in my truck at the end of the day.
