I have been reading several threads in this section in which the proposed solution after being comfronted by a less than capable BG he ends up with you holding him at gunpoint and now you have to call the cops.

Now texting and driving is dangerous because you take your attention off the road and the possibility of ending up wrapped around a lamp post is very real. After you just somehow managed to disarm/intimidate/outsmart your BG that just a few seconds before was threatening your life one way or another, how do you call 911 safely. Make him turn around and lay on the floor, kneel, etc. and then call 911 with cell phone infront of my line of sight with firearm still on BG? What if unfriendly BG does not comply with instructions? How do I not take my eyes off the guy and still manage to get cell phone, open cell phone and diall 911 instead of 411, with my weak hand only?

Any ideas?

I don't think it's necessary that you believe YOU have to call the police unless you are in a remote area alone, then you might have to do so.

In a normal setting, there will be people around to be able to assist in your request for anyone to call 911 and have units respond.

Additionally, if you are holding the BG at gun point, he may just turn around and walk away. You would not shoot him as he is no longer an immediate threat. If he's compliant at gun point, and you are alone with no one near enough to assist in calling LE to respond, you have several options but without the training in this area they may also be something you don't feel comfortable in doing.

I agree with Brownie. If someone else is around, I point to that individual and ask them to call 911.

If I have to do it myself, it would be tough. The adrenaline after that event-hope it kicks in after the LEOs arrive, not while I'm dialing and holding at gunpoint someone who has just tried to harm/kill me or a loved one.

drbarbara, always remember your safety comes first and as a civilian, you have no obligation to effect an arrest (which is what holding him at gunpoint really means).

IMHO, IF you can stop an assault and make him run away, that is the best option assuming no one else is endangered by him. IF you can retreat and then call 911 fine but your immediate safety always has to be your first concern.

I think some of the answers here, given by ex LEOs and more professional SD experts are really not practical for many if not most less trained individuals.

I honestly think that mindsets should be on threat removal and escape rather than captures and there is NO obligation, moral OR legal, to effect an arrest.
The call , as Brownie points out, will probably already have been made and you are doing it to be on record as having used your weapon in self defense.

If there is anyone else around, let them call 911. If it's just you & BG, all alone, yes, order him to get on the ground, arms out. If he complies, great! If not, you back up to get reaction room, if he closes, shoot him. If you can get to your phone weak handed, take your time & feel for the buttons, but keep your eyes on the threat!

Shoot first, call 911 when he's down...:D
That would be illegal... You can only use deadly force to stop the threat, once the BG is stopped, if you shoot, it's no longer legal.
