Position SUL

981 Views 26 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  exbluelight
Position SUL was originally developed in Brazil by Alan Brosnan and Max Joseph of TFTT and TEES specifically for close-quarters high-threat environments for maximum retention of the gun without being in a threatening posture while around people and potentially for extended periods of time.

SUL=Portuguese for “South”

Anyone been trained in using this position? Have used this position either in training or on the streets? Ever heard of SUL?

Never heard it referred to as SUL but it's something I practice for retention. It also lends itself to the center axis relock stance (CAR) in a bladed position.
Very similar to CAR retention.

CAR is what I heard it referred to before if it’s the same thing.
It's a little different in hand positioning but both are very similar with a common goal. I prefer the CAR retention simply because I don't like the non shooting hand arrangement. As well, taught CAR by a master CAR instructor for LE in the 90's, when shown SUL, staying with what I was already comfortable with seemed prudent

I remember now. It was the now defunct training company OPS. Options for Personal Security. Run by Andy something. Lots of good stuff packed in several levels of training.
Andy Stanford, I met him at the 1" to 100 yrds" week long event in Laughlin, Nv. around 2008. Had seen him post all the time on GT, no proponent of threat focused pistol skills.

That’s right andy Stanford. Quite a bit an ADD individual. Front site press guy. I think I heard he was yeagers main instructor. He hired a good instructor for the “police Hall of Fame” range who WP and i went for his classes. I onnly had one class with him. I wasn’t impressed, way to ADD for me but fortunately his instructor was very good. Chuck was a much better instructor and well versed in pistol craft. It was a good foundation for us.
Another credit was having something to do with Gunsite, hell if I can remember what the connection was now.
