Glad to find this forum, looks like a lot of good information. I am looking for a place in the Plantation, Fort Lauderdale area to get my Concealed license, a good gun store, and a 9mm gun to carry. I am looking forward to finding answers to my questions!!

You can't go wrong with a Glock 19

kd,

Welcome from Pembroke Pines. Check out some of the other threads. There is a lot of info already posted regarding your questions. There are a lot of different gun shops to check out. I did my class at Bass Pro. Probably the closest place to you is Weston Arms to get your CWL class. A lot of the ranges will allow you to rent weapons. My advice is to check out one of the local places to see what fits/feels best in your hands. Once you figure out what weapon you like, you'll need a good holster and belt to choose to carry your rig properly.

Welcome from West Broward. While I would not purchase a gun at Guns & Knives, a gun shop and range on 441 between Oakland Park Blvd. & Commercial Blvd., I would go there to see, touch and shoot various guns you have interest in. They have a range there and they rent pretty much anything you might want to buy. It's a great way to try and see what you like best.

They also offer classes for your CCW, but my experience was that it was pretty poor and you would be better served by finding a more thorough class and instructor.

If I can be of any help or direction, just ask.

Hi KD,

There's an excellent gun shop off 595 between Pine Island and University (8238 West State Road 84) called National Law Enforcement Distributors. They spent a lot of time with me when I bought my gun for concealed carry. Their phone number is 954-915-8226.

I took classes at both Weston Arms (also off 595) and at Bass Pro in Dania. The Bass Pro class was the better of the two by far.

Lots of great info and friendly people on this site. Have fun! :ak :dancingbanana

Hey KDFlyer,

Welcome from Deerfield Beach. I used to live in Plantation off Nob Hill and Cleary. The closest place to you for your CCW permit is Weston Arms right of 84/595 on the eastbound side. It's just east of Carmax. They have a brand new range and a limited selection of guns. The folks behind the counter seem nice enough, but their prices are right around MSRP, so you're not saving any money there.

I took my CCW course there and although everyone was real friendly and helpful, the class was not all that informative. Literally everything I was "taught" that day I had already learned on my own by reading on the interwebs. They go through the requirements, and that's fine, but there are other places that offer more and better.

Their website ( http://www.westonarms.us/ ) claims that if you follow their process you can get your permit in as little as ten days. I'm sure that was pre-election because now they're talking 6 weeks or so. I'll be happy if it happens that fast for me.

The range is brand new (as in it opened on January 12th or thereabouts) so I've never gone there, but new is usually nice.

You can probably do better than Weston Arms, but you can also surely do worse.

there is also an outdoor firing range at the west end of 595 in Markham park. They've got a lot of rules, but from what i've read it's a nice place to go.

Good luck.

Dan

p.s. From what I've read, good 9mm carry guns include Glock 26 and Kahr PM9. If you're price conscious, you might want to look into a S&W SW9VE.
