Florida Concealed Carry banner

Places offlimits, clarification needed

Hi all, I'm coming to Orlando to do the Disney thing with the family later this month and want to make sure I follow the right set of rules for FL.

I know this gets asked a lot but I haven't been able to find an answer after reading a few pages deep on the forum. I have a Missouri CCW, which is valid in FL. In MO businesses have the option of posting signs to prohibit CCW on their property. I'm assuming that would be an option for FL businesses too, but haven't been able to find it anywhere. In MO,KS and TX the law is very specific about the signage and if it does not follow the guidelines in the law the sign is invalid.

I've read thru 790.06 and understand the list shown there, but I didn't see anything about it there. I called the FL ag dept and the lady was "other than helpful" to say the least. :thumbsdwn She told me that banks are off limits (which looks to be untrue), and that Disney is off limits (no surprise) and that no businesses could legally prevent me from CCW by posting a sign.

Soo, after all of that, what do I need to look out for in FL while I'm there?

To say the least, I'd love some actual help if anybody has it to offer.

Thanks,

Fezwig

Fezwig,

Welcome to our site. Here is a short answer to some of your questions. Banks are not off limit but post offices are. You are not allowed to be in the bar part of a restaurant though.

Businesses are on an individual basis whether that complies with the law or not. We can carry concealed but some of them push the envelope and put signs on their doors telling us no firearms. Some have written their company policies stating that no firearms are allowed. Again, concealed means concealed and it is up to the person as to how far to take that and if they have the funds to pursue that with a lawsuit. Most of us don't have a bazillion dollars lying around so in a sense it forces us to leave firearms at home. My dh has his license but he works in a defense building and they have a no firearms policy. Because we like to be employed he chooses to not press the issue and leaves his firearms at home.

If you go into an establishment that has a 'no firearms' sign and you are found out and are asked to leave then by all means, leave.

As far as Disney, they have that no firearms policy but I've heard of many who have done it anyway. Again, if you carry concealed there should be no reason to be found out but none of us really want to be a test case. They do a flimsy job of inspecting your carry in bags but do not search your person. I've carried in knives for my food preparation and they've never even seen them. These are just kitchen knives but they were in my bag and no one ever said a thing. I was out at Disney Boardwalk the other week and felt just intimidated enough to leave my firearm in the car. Looking back no one would have suspected a thing and I could have gotten away with it.

I'm sure some of the other guys will chime in with their own opinions. Welcome again to our site.

Wow, thanks for the speedy replies!

Mama, I know what you mean about keeping it hidden. I don't expect that will be a problem, but things don't always work out the way I expect either, lol.

I've been carrying for about 5 years now, ever since MO got us set up right. Ironically on a non-res FL license. Just got my MO ccw after my FL expired in December. I guess the point of that is that I am used to and comfortable without feeling/looking paranoid. IE repeatedly checking and feeling my gun or other givaways. I really love the part of MO law that if you get spotted somehow carrying against the posted signage it is a slap on the wrist, but wasn't sure about FL. I think most states are a little less forgiving than that.

inkedott, thanks for those links. The first one didn't work for me and the second is the one that led me to the site. Since I obviously plan on seeing The Rodent, that one was especially interesting and pertinent.

I love my Smartcarry!

I haven't been to Disney, but I've been to universal & islands of adventure. They have metal detectors you go through to enter the parks. So carrying would be little point there.
When did they install metal detectors at Universal? I've carried there (and at Disney) with no problems in the past.
I wouldn't want to be a test case, either. Disney claims to be exempted due to its ownership of a Federal Explosives Permit.

Although a new law gives Floridians the peace of mind to carry a gun in their cars, Disney World, which bans employees from carrying weapons, said the law doesn't apply to it because the law exempts employers with a federal explosives permit — which Disney has for its massive, daily fireworks shows.
"

There was also a security guard who challenged Disney on this policy, was terminated, and then retained Gutmacher for a lawsuit.

I think you are confusing 790.06 with 790.251. the 790.251 applies to ccw holders who want to keep a gun in their car. It does not apply to ccw holders who carry the gun on them which is governed by 790.06

That only applies to employees, not customers/guests. There is no legal prohibition from storing a firearm in your vehicle or carrying it on your person at Disney or any other theme park.

Unless they just installed metal detectors in the last 6 mos that statement is false.

Could you imagine how long it would take to funnel as many people inside a theme park that go through metal detectors....whew...
I just went to both Universal and Islands about three weeks ago, they had nothing of the sort.

I didn't carry because I didn't want my firearm to fall from the various coasters I rode. ;)
?? They didn't make you go through those big arches with your tickets? Are those not metal detectors?
If you mean the area where you get your ticket punched/checked and you go through the turn style, then yes. However, I went through with a bunch of metal on me (Dog tags, cell phone, car keys, change, etc.) and nothing happened. So did all of my co-workers.....
ok, maybe those are not then. Looked like it. When I went they were searching some people. I didn't have metal on me besides my keys. Didn't get stopped.

Been to Kennedy Space Center recently. 2.5 hours just to get into the park because of the metal detectors.

NEVER AGAIN!

Yeah, I think they do the same thing Disney does and run a cursory check in bags, but that's about it. :popcorn
Sweet, I was hoping Disney still did not have metal detectors. Thats another thing I like about smartcarry, even though I won't be too quick on the draw. Very secure and that thing ain't goin nowhere on accident.

Thanks everybody for all the good recent info!

I was at Disney in December. No detectors.
