Ok, yesterday was an educational moment for me learning how the AR platform is going to perform for me.

I was originally going to run with a red dot. However, old eyes, combined with a probable need for new glasses, revealed anything 50yds or more is straining to get a solid focused line on the target. I need magnification.

A friend suggested LPVO. He’s got a 1-6x he really likes.

Suggestions?

Before I went to the Aimpoint (with a magnifier) I ran a Nikon M223 1X4

PM me if you’re interested, inexpensive, high quality scope with co witness mount.

Lots of options. But, I'm liking the Primary Arms 5X Prism optic on my SCAR-16.

^^^Nice choice!

Pricey. However every bit of advice I’ve gotten has been buy once cry once. Particularly re. optics.

ETA..Oh, and I dig the SCAR-16! A fella was shooting one in a couple bays down. I chatted with him for a bit about it. I learned a lot 👍

Hell, that's a CHEAP one! $300 is way less than "THE" optic to get, which is the Trijicon ACOG, which runs about $1200.

But, I submit that the PA 5X Prism scope is a great value.

Oh I know. The Mrs. was sitting next to me when I pulled up the website. I had to act shocked. 🤣 🤣 🤣 I’m getting close to that “How much is THAT going to cost NOW!” point w/her.

What’s the max distance you plan on shooting this rifle?

That’s a very good question. Id love to say I’ll go for the gold eventually and max out the range of the platform. I think it’d be fun to try. I don’t think there’s a range, public or private, anywhere near that’s over 200yds. For the moment, this is just something fun for me to do. I’m learning something new and challenging myself with a new skill. With what amounts to an off-the shelf 16” rifle in 5.56 (or .223) I’m unlikely to have the skill nor equipment to reach out a lot farther than that accurately. Everyday “plinking” is probably going to be most often limited to 100. But, I really do have very poor eyesight. Even corrected. 100yds is just beyond me w/o magnification. Even 50 would benefit w/a touch.

Hell, FWIW I was having to use a little pair of binoculars yesterday to see where my shots were landing @50 yds. Somewhat in my defense, the lighting was just awful-indoor range.

Then I suggest a fixed power scope (6, 8, or 10X). This way you don’t have to worry about adjustments for different distances and it’ll serve you well anywhere from 50-300yds.

I have this one on my precision AR and can easily see out to 300 with no issues. SWFA 10x42 SS 30mm Riflescope

I sell Athlon optics and we carry a variety of scopes for carbines. I can beat any price.
they make a 4x prism that is a lot of bang for the buck.

and if you prefer a 1x6 optic

Lifetime warranty
These products are a lot of bang for the buck.

Rad, the long range accuracy of the avg. (decent) AR15 May surprise you. (y)

Now seeing well enough to take advantage, another story. A good trigger is probably the best early upgrade you could make, IMHO.

I have an earlier version of that same optic I bought from Anduril and I really like it, too. In fact, I'm pretty sure if heard their reticle design was licensed to ACOG for their M4 optic. It's an excellent optic for the 5.56 cartridge! 🤠

Trigger is something I’m keen on reviewing. I didn’t hate it yesterday. Reasonably light and smooth to squeeze. But, there’s definitely room for improvement. It’s just a hair on the crunchy side. Especially more noticeable as more rounds went down. 👍 I’m breaking things down tonight. Until I get a chance to review my options, I’ll make sure it’s clean and a little oil. I‘m old. Memory failing. I may or may not have neglected the trigger assembly during my initial oil before use.

Lube the trigger Assy. with red aviation grease if you can find it. Advice is from Geissele. I have the SSE, two stage. Ends with about a 2lb. Pull. This one was for range only.
