I am fairly new to this forum, so this may have been cussed and discussed in previous threads. However, does anyone have any reliable knowledge if the open carry effort is going anywhere in our state?

Thanks, BC

Not. Going. Anywhere.

The last time I looked the online petition only had a few thousand signatures, not very encouraging.

I don't think I like it. I did open carry many years ago in Pennsylvania in suburban Philadelphia. I was pretty young and really think I did it because it made me look bad ass or something. Actually it made me look like an ass. It makes people uncomfortable at best and scares the hell outta some. I would rather keep it under wraps unless needed and the element of suprise should work to benifit me. Just my .02 cents and to each their own!

open carry

I am new here so I will chime in

I don't open carry now but I did in the late 80's when I lived in Nevada. I belong to several open carry sites open carry.org and delaware.org, I have found some folks new the firearms hobby are mostly members this bothers me but they all have a point its a right in there respective states and they are excerising it. I have signed the petition for open carry here, the movement to obtain open carry here is slow, but it was that way in several others states. we are all allowed our own opinion, but turning on fellow gun owners only assist's our enemies. I support responsible open carry, especially when its very hot

I would prefer to carry concealed, carrying a gun open is something that I would not like to advertise, unless I was wearing a uniform and a badge

There is a time and a place for everything. Some feel that open carry may prevent a situation from ever escalating, others say it does not give you the "element of surprise" that they prefer to have. It depends on where you are going. I went to visit family in the state of GA after getting my FL license and open carried, just to say that I did it because we can't here, and most people did not even notice. To each their own. :D

I would definitely like to have the option to open carry and I did so a few times back in '87 when it was legal in Florida for a few months. I'm not saying I would do the Wally World Walk with pistols on each hip, but it would certainly be convenient at times during the summer months.

Just remember, bad guys carry concealed. Besides, you become the first target!
I don't buy that...unless it's some gangbanger wannabe trying to get initiated, no bad guy is going to want to tangle with a visibly armed individual.

I'm with deadeyedick on this as well. I open carry quite a bit in public out here in Az. I wouldn't say you see a lot of that, but you see enough of it here that you'd be reading in the news that some open carrying civilian was targeted, attacked and disarmed of his firearm if it was happening.

I'm of the same attitude as Glock23-4-Me too!!!!! There's a time and place for everything. Open carry isn't for 24/7, in large crowds where a gun grab might be a bigger possibility, etc.

Gotta go with Brownie and Deadeye on this. Sometimes I just don't feel like going to grab another shirt when I need to run to the store for a gallon of moo-juice or a twelve-pack of soda.

I've OCd here (when it was legal), in AZ, GA and VA, where and when appropriate. Never had an incident.

A lot of folks have the false impression that OCing = 'shoot me first'. Well, it's just never happened.

To each their own. I'd probably OC if it were legal here, but wouldn't make a daily habbit of it.

I did some open carry in New Mexico where it is quite legal. As stated, it is not for every day or every situation though. What I did like about New Mexico is the fact that your car is an extension of your home and you may have your handgun any way you want it while in your vehicle. Prolly why I didn't hear of many car jackings while living in New Mexico.

Brownie,

What is the opinion of the business owners in AZ about open carry? Do any post signs forbidding it on their premises?

I am just curious how the businesses here in Florida would react to open carry in their stores. I think people in AZ are a bit more "gun friendly" and understanding than here in Florida.

Allowing Concealed Carry is one thing, you know out of sight - out of mind. But I wonder how they would react to someone walking into their businesses with a 1911 openly carried on their belt at the 3 O'Clock position?

Only signs at entrances to businesses I've seen is when we go to some rodeo or cowboy event. Most local shops have no signs, and have never said a word to me if I happened to be carrying openly like walking into Walgreen's, Osco drug, stop and rob convenience stores, Jack in the Box, McDonalds, Burger Swine, businesses like that. I bet I'd get some looks at WalMart but I doubt anyone would say anything. Buddy of mine was approached by a manager at one of them locally after a snowbird [ they live here for the winter from north central states like Wisconsin, Michigan ] felt threatened by his presence and his openly carried sidearm. The manager told the woman it was perfectly within his rights to carry openly and he wasn't breaking any laws. The snowbird walked out as she didn't get the result she wanted from the manager.

I walked in to a restaurant last week for dinner with a shooting buddy [ they don't serve alcohol so that's allowed ] and two deputy sheriff's were just paying their bill. We sort of met face to face at the entrance waiting to be seated and though both fleetingly looked at the double rig with two glock 17's in it, neither gave any indication they thought that was unusual or breaking the law [ they knew the restaurant didn't serve alcohol as well :D ].

I wouldn't want to carry openly in the downtown areas of cities like Phoenix or Tucson, might get some attention there by LE, but go to Flagstaff, Prescott, or up near the Grand Caznyon and you are not even so much as looked at by the locals if openly carrying.

As a CCL holder, I don't know if i like the idea of OC. I think it would make me nervous to see some people walking around with guns in open view. I would not know if they were licensed to carry a gun or not, or whether they have had any training with guns. With concealed carry, if you don't know that i have a gun, then you have no reason to be scared.
Even if OC was passed in Fla, i would not do it, i would continue to CC. But it would be nice to know that if for some reason my gun was in open view, like on a motorcycle or when i was reaching up for something at a store, that i would not cause a riot.
So i guess MY opinion of OC is i would rather not have it available, but would like to have some leeway with accidental revealment of a CC weapon.
I know i will be flamed big time for my opinion, but that is my opinion. you are free to have and voice your opinion tooooooo.:thumsup

I have open carried many times in VA with no problems. Mostly during trips back and forth to the various stores that I was responsible for. I would forget that it was there and go in to resteraunts and gas stations with out covering up. I remember stopping to help a motorist out that was involved in a serious accident at 3:00 in the morning and when the State Troopers arrived that just gave me the once over took my info and sent me on my way.

I would not know if they were licensed to carry a gun or not, or whether they have had any training with guns.

My understanding of the qual for CCW permits in Fla is next to useless and is not an indication of proficiency with a firearm in any way.

It's the same out here in Az, the shooting qual portion is a little more extensive. You have to keep 4 out of 5 rounds inside a circle that's 14" across and 17" high at 5 yrds and 10 yrds.

Can you say, lowest common denominator where proof of proficiency with a firearm is concerned in Fla and Az? :D

In Az, you don't have to be licensed to carry a gun openly. There are some who have more skills that open carry and have never passed a proficiency test of any kind than the ccw carriers out here who've just got their license.

So i guess MY opinion of OC is i would rather not have it available, but would like to have some leeway with accidental revealment of a CC weapon.

Oh, I see, you'd like to have your cake and eat it too? :rolf
