I used to have an AR-7 many years ago made by Charter Arms, but I would hardly consider it 'substantial'. It was designed to be a lightweight, compact survival rifle...pretty much the opposite of substantial. If you're looking for a good quality semi-auto rifle in .22 LR, the Ruger 10/22 is tough to beat, but Marlin also makes some nice rifles.
Of course, if you're looking for the coolest .22 semi-auto ever made, it would have to be the GSG5...
