A bit of a "cross-post," but some folks might not see it in the other thread about a range day AAR.

From my trip to the range yesterday. This is the 100 yard range. It's really scary how many rifle owners think they need only bolt the scope to the rifle. They have never even heard of zeroing a scope.

Think about how far off you have to be to hit the first baffle! Or any of them, for that matter.

You can even see GROUPS of holes in the baffles... indicating the shooter was fairly consistent in his POA, but he had NO IDEA where the impacts were. Yet, he kept shooting.

Here are some more photos I took when this range first opened. Here you can see the baffle strike "groups."

BTW, you can go to a pistol range and see the same frustrations with novices who slapped on optic on their pistol and don't understand why they aren't hitting the target.

I hope you don’t think this surprises me in any way?

Surprising? No. Disappointing, in a way? Yes. Just makes you shake your head. This ain't rocket surgery or brain science, folks!

Why do you think when we shoot intermediate ranges we always check zero at 100 yrds?

I’d be willing to bet a good portion of them were done on purpose by people who wanted to shoot more than just paper and see what it would do. I witnessed it at Gator as an RSO. People purposefully shooting the steel deflector plates just to ‘see’ what it would do.
But still it’s quite worrisome that a lot of them are as you say people who don’t know. Probably took them 40rnds to figure out where they were shooting too!

Nope. Doing that intentionally will get you a permanent ban from the range. You give people too much credit. They are actually this ignorant. We see the same thing on the pistol range with optics. They slap it on there and can't figure out why they're missing the paper. They've literally never heard of zeroing an optic.

You’ll only get banned if caught. On a busy day it’s impossible to track every shooter and every round. Seen it with my own eyes people shooting stuff on purpose. Yeah I am giving them too much credit because I’ve seen them shoot things like that on purpose. I’ve seen people aim at the ceiling at Gator just to see what it would do to the strike plates. It is you who’s giving people too much credit thinking they only wanna shoot the paper and not see the penetration or huge hole their ought six will put in something. I didn’t say all of them were. But a good number were done on purpose.

And you didn't report it to an RSO?? I'm not one to typically "snitch," especially for minor infractions. But shooting the structures of the range is RECKLESS. I don't want reckless shooters on the line with me. Which other SAFETY rules are they violating?

BTW... we can keep this discussion on this thread. No need to duplicate it on the other.

I was at Okss a few years ago and a guy with an Ak was literally trying to saw in half one of the telephone pole supports. He didn’t think nothing of it. The rso noticed it same time as me and ‘politely’ told him to stop. Wasn’t but a few mins later the guy packed up and left.
At Gator as an rso myself yes I tossed a few people off the range for seeing them do all kinds of stupid stuff and that includes aiming at the strike plate or target hangers on purpose.

I’m not at all surprised. Anyone who has visited an indoor range has likely noted holes everywhere. The ones that always spook me most are the ones you see in the divider between lanes.

When I checked in to the indoor rifle range last weekend the fella asked me if I had sights. I said yep. He asked “Front and rear?”

Ok, that begins to beg a question. So I asked. He said it’s not uncommon to get guys who just bought an AR and waltz in to shoot. No sights. No optic. “I bought it this way!” 🙄 🤬

There was a guy and friends at Okss the last time I was there shooting a new AR that had no sights on it. He kept wondering why he wasn’t hitting the target. Truly mind blowing.
I think Racer was there with me? If not it was the time prior to that. The RSO after he fired a few rounds walked over and told him he needed sights and was just wasting ammo. Shooter almost had the look in his face of ‘what do you mean sights?’

What's mind blowing is that the range allowed it. The FCC range will not allow a gun without a sighting system. And, I've seen them send shooters with guns like that packing.

No. I would have said something. That's just STUPID. And dangerous.

The RSO after he fired a few rounds walked over and told him he needed sights and was just wasting ammo. Shooter almost had the look in his face of ‘what do you mean sights?’
Again... the RSO's comment was that he was WASTING AMMO??? That shooter is a legal liability to the range, especially if they ALLOW it and the shooter ends up sending a bullet out of the range, injuring someone or causing property damage.

He should have been booted off the range. What the hell is going on at OKSS??? They've apparently become VERY lax on safety.

I’ve reached an age where little surprises me anymore. However, I have to admit being a litte shook when that fella told me about folks who try to shoot w/o any sights.

I know most us are devout believers in the 2nd and gov mandated training is taboo. But, for the love of God, just because it’s not required, get some damn instruction! Especially if you have so little knowledge or experience. Hell. Ask! I’ve never been to a range where the folks there wouldn’t take a few moments to at least help a newbie step up to the line safely. Or even a neighboring shooter. I can’t imagine just buying (or renting) a deadly weapon and thinking “oh I got this”.

But that’s just me I guess. Between my dad, cousins and grandfather, I was instructed to shoot when I was old enough to reach the trigger. I took the hunter’s safety course as a teen. Twice. (A friend wanted to go but not alone).

Does no one do that anymore?

And, today it's easier than ever. All you have to do is search it up on the internet. There are videos demonstrating EEeeeverything. Hell, I learned how to replace the ice maker in our freezer. I learned how to fix my laser printer at the office. There are TONS of FREE videos online on how to zero a riflescope.

I am mostly self-taught when it comes to rifles, scopes, and precision shooting. But, I RESEARCHED it a TON before doing it. Books. Videos. And online forums like this.

Every rifle owner should read this book:

Naturally, the author (Ryan Cleckner) has instructional videos online.

I've helped fellow (stranger) shooters zero a scope (among other things) at the range. Get some "range strange!" ;)

Wait... are you suggesting people shoot things they aren't supposed to?

As someone that works at a range,, the holes in the floor, ceiling, baffles indicate that this is not in the least bit surprising....

Yes... that's a whole other (similar) topic. I see people with large paper targets set at 5 yards... missing the paper.

Along the same lines... I recently recorded and edited a video titled, "You Can Miss with a Laser!"

Doesn’t surprise me one bit.

I actually find it fun to mount and zero optics.

I watched a herd of cops set up man sized targets 5 yards away and get out their poodle shooter ARs. They took offense when I asked why they didn't just club the targets like baby seals
