The more the better; under high stress, your fine motor skills go out the window.
On my night stand I have a G-19 with a +2 mag with a light on the pica rail, my G-26 when I unholster it to go to bed, and my wife has her S&W .357 with a speed loader on her side.
Plus flashlights, and cell phones.

Most importantly we have a plan, and a back-up plan; hardware is nothing without the appropriate software :)

XD9 and XD.45 on the nightstand...

I figure if someone's in my house, I'm not going down without a fight. :rolf

No, truth be told, the XD9 is always on the nightstand. The XD 45 ACP is put there as standard practice when I change for bed.

But it works out to my favor because SHOULD anything transpire overnight, I know both of my weapons are accounted for and cannot be used against me!

I have lived with the XD9 for many years as my primary weapon (only recently bought the .45 ACP) and have welcomed the extra rounds just incase.

Personally, I like the .45 acp because of its increased expansion and stopping power over the 9mm.

I have no doubt I am going to hit what I am shooting at, I just want to make sure I knock it down and stop it.

Hmmm...makes me think of the new signature I just put up. :rolf

Good points all around and thanks for the picture!

Nightstand Pistol? No guns sit on the nightstand, they sit on the floor next to the bed.

Whatever gun I've carried that day. Could be the g17, the g30, the g21, the sig220, or a couple of other 9's I carry on occasion. If I've carried two J's that day, the g17 is next to me that night [ that g17 stays loaded at all times and is available always at the ready within reach.

Another thing, If I got a 45, it would be an M&P, just like my 9mm. I would like to keep the manual of arms the same on all of my potential "high stress" weapons. I think this is very important.

I have the compact with a full size mag, and x-grip extender. I have over 1000 rounds down range, strong hand, weak hand, weaver, isoscoles, and not one stovepipe or jam of any kind. I use the short mag, pinkie mag, and fullsize mag at the range to be able to use it in different concealment combinations. I am sold on the M&P platform, and can shoot it better than any other.

I actually keep it in the bottom drawer and open the drawer when I go to bed.
I can reach down and grab it, or roll down on the floor and have it. I have a quick access safe in the drawer, but remove it, and place it right where I know where it is before I go to bed.

My nightstand handgun is also whatever I carried that day, which means it's either in 9mm 124gr+P or 38spl 125gr+P.

On the occasions I can carry only a .380 that day one of the above calibers come out of the safe once I get home.

Sounds to me like you are already doing the right thing. This is what I do with my Glock. It makes sense to me to use what you carry.

Now if you just want a 45 and this is a good excuse to get it. Go for it.:D

If truth be told, I do not keep my Commander on my nightstand or in it. I keep it in my " Mattress Holster ".

I bought one many years ago and it has travelled with me wherever I have gone.

This one is similar to the one I have.

http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://mattressholster.com/djstudios_-_mattress_holster_3001001.jpg&imgrefurl=http://mattressholster.com/djstudios_-_mattress_holster_3.htm&usg=__IUW_HTNeve_lTFU3j30YAXC1Al0=&h=347&w=457&sz=53&hl=en&start=1&um=1&tbnid=r2ZsFrseKOFRjM:&tbnh=97&tbnw=128&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dmattress%2Bholster%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Doff%26rls%3Dcom.microsoft:*:IE-SearchBox%26rlz%3D1I7ADBR_en%26sa%3DN%26um%3D1

The photograph above shows the proper placement of the gun holster on "The Original Mattress Holster Clip ".

The belt loop of the holster is slipped on the "L" shaped portion of the holster clip. The flat portion of the holster clip is then placed in between the mattress and box springs of your bed.

Depending on which side of the bed an individual prefers to sleep, the holster clip may be turned upside down for use on the left side of your bed.

The gun and holster are both secure and snug against the side of your bed ready for quick and easy removal in case of an emergency.

You will find that your holster is also very easily removed form the holster clip if you need to take your gun with you for personal carry use during the day.

Personally, I prefer the larger caliber rounds, anytime. Generally, it takes fewer hits with the larger weapon to produce the same results as the smaller.

Now, most rooms in your home [unless you are J. Moneybags Gotrocks, III] are only about 10-15 feet across. If you are too bleary eyed and fumbly to hit a man sized target at that range, even in the dark, then I suggest you consider a baseball bat for your nightstand weapon. Whatever you choose, make sure it is the one with which you are most familiar. It is embarrassing, or possibly even deadly, to accidentally dump your mag or fail to disengage your safety when confronting an invader.

Is counter space limiting you to just one gun? :pistols Have the .45 for first option, empty mag ... pick up 9 ... empty mag ... the best of both worlds :)

If you have to limit yourself, 10 rounds of the .45 should suffice, if you can't hit them with a few of those big 10 rounds even with bad motor skills ... you should probably go back to the range and fire a few hundred rounds until it is ingrained into you.

I like TampaSsgt's holster too, that's a great idea, it would be hidden to a perp the way our bed is situated.

Just bear in mind whatever you are shooting may penetrate walls and windows and with today's 'tight knit society' (AKA Sub-Divisions) where your neighbor's window is 8' from yours be careful where you shoot. Remember that in a high stress situation when you spend 15 rounds of ammo and 5 hit the BG where did the other 10 go?

It'd be a shame to have the police show up to get the BG and tell you that in your firefight you inadvertently shot the neighbor's child asleep in her bed.

Just a friendly reminder to ALWAYS be sure of whats beyond your target no matter where it is! :drinks

Magsafe is good for stopping a BG and not over penetrating...so...maybe Magsafe?
