A couple of years ago I purged my blade inventory down to a few knives I always carry/use. I used the monies I got out of the sales to purchase other things. I do this all the time from one type of item to the next (keeps me out of financial debt). Recently I have been getting the itch (no, not the same itch Riverpig gets) to get back into the folding knife game (just want something new in my pockets). So, I picked up three blades this week to start off my journey. I’m no steel expert but, I know what I like in a pocket knife.

First up: The most $$$$ I’ve spent on a broken blade thus far in life. The Hinderer Knives XM-18 3.5 Slicer.

Overall Length: 8.25"
Blade Length: 3.50"
Cutting Edge: 3.125"
Blade Thickness: 0.16"
Blade Material: CPM-20CV
Hardness: 60-61 RC
Blade Style: Drop Point
Blade Grind: Flat
Finish: Stonewash
Edge Type: Plain
Handle Length: 4.75"
Handle Thickness: 0.53"
Handle Material: G-10
Color: Orange, Blue
Frame/Liner: Titanium
Weight: 5.70 oz.
User: Right Hand
Pocket Clip: Tip-Up, Tip-Down
Knife Type: Manual
Opener: Flipper
Lock Type: Frame Lock
Brand: Hinderer
Model: XM-18
Designer: Rick Hinderer
Country of Origin: USA

I don’t care for the orange color on the g-10 scale. With that said, these knives are very difficult to get. You have to be in the right place at the right time to be able to order one. These sell out within minutes of being in stock anywhere! (You can get them on eBay if you want to pay a premium) So, orange it is.

Update as of 9-3-2021:

I acquired a new Hinderer scale for this folder as I don’t like the orange.

This next one I purchased as a work knife, something that works well but I have no worries of breaking or losing it while at work.

Civivi Elementum

Blade Width: 0.875"

Blade Style: Drop Point
Blade Grind: Hollow
Finish: Satin
Edge Type: Plain
Handle Length: 4.03"
Handle Width: 1.00"
Handle Thickness: 0.43"
Handle Material: Micarta
Color: Green
Frame/Liner: Stainless Steel
Weight: 2.89 oz.
User: Right Hand
Pocket Clip: Tip-Up
Knife Type: Manual
Opener: Flipper
Lock Type: Liner Lock
Brand: CIVIVI
Model: Elementum

This blade has impressed me so far. The action is smooth as butter with perfect centering. The blade shape is perfect for what I use it for at work and the lock up is solid. Highly recommend this budget blade to everyone.

Third blade I bought cause “it looked cool”, I’m glad I bought it, as it is super smooth in the action an locks up solid. I normally don’t go for this blade shape (I’m slowly liking it tho).

Good looking knives. What do you think of CMP-20CV? I have a couple of knives in S30V and S35VN and love them.

This is my first blade sporting the 20CV and I have not used or sharpened it yet (came hair slitting sharp out of the box tho). Can’t say anything about it as I have no experience with it. I believe the S35VN is the next Gen S30V….right?

Thanks Caleb!!
I was looking for a mid-grade ($$) knife as a gift for a friend, and I think this might fit the bill perfectly.
What do you think?

Also comes in red: QSP Penguin | Liner Lock Knife | Red Micarta | Blade HQ

I think I prefer the denim blue.
I prefer the denim myself. The one in my OP is a Knives Plus exclusive with upgraded steel. QSP Penguin Knife QS130-KP3 - Knives Plus Exclusive - Satin S35VN Sheepfoot - Jade G10 Micarta - Liner Lock Folder (just in case you want to be a “better” friend, )

I visited the Rick Hinderer website.
I didn't see a single knife "in-stock".

I assume that is normal for custom-made knives.
They are difficult to acquire, it’s one of those “right place at the right time” type of deals. I actually ordered two of them. I kept this one and sold the other one on eBay in less than an hour from posting it (for a small profit). I can keep an eye out for you if you are interested, let me know.

Like the blade. Curious are you going to flip the clip to other end so it’s carried tip up? It’s why I like Benchmades because most allow for tip up carry which puts things in proper position when you draw it.
