New shooter had a ND at our local IDPA match. Tried to clear a malfunction with his trigger in the finger guard of a 1911. The slide returning to battery gave enough forward momentum on the gun to push the trigger into the shooter's finger. Luckily, the gun was pointed downrange.

Be careful out there.

If the ND occurred during a normal CoF, it would be, at minimum, a DQ for the day. If it was an egregious safety violation, possibly done for good.

Assuming the above happened AFTER the CoF was stopped, and they were just trying to clear the malfunction, it would be a judgment call on the part of the Safety Officer and Match Director.

With our group, he'd probably be done for the day. We get 100 shooters a match, many of them first timers. We really can't afford to dink around.

Technically, I believe he should have been done for the day. However, since the gun was still pointed downrange, and because it was his first IDPA match ever, I think some leeway was given, to keep from scaring him away from the sport. I'm sure if the ND went anywhere BUT downrange, there would've been a DQ and a "thank you, come again".

Are new shooters to IDPA matches encouraged to slow down and enjoy the course rather than trying to see what kind of time they can make? I could just imagine nerves coming into play and new shooters getting flustered which causes dumb mistakes. Just a thought.

I know I know this but please keep in mind that a question sincerely asked is not a dumb question.

What is ND?

I have used up my quota of brain cells tonight and I don't want to advance a few from tomorrow because it is a busy school day and the kids need me.

I have no shame. I know I should know what ND is but am totally drawing a blank. Someone please put me out of my misery.

ND is a negligent discharge, which for many people, is distinct from an AD, or accidental discharge.

You get NDs basically from unsafe gun handling skills: having your finger in the trigger guard and/or on the trigger when you shouldn't, pointed the muzzle at something other than your target, etc.

An AD occurs due to some malfunction with the gun. Mechanical safety failure, something happening to the sear/hammer engagement, etc.

I'm not so comfy here that I will not hesitate to ask the obvious questions. I have to keep telling myself that my world of friends do not speak guns at all so I'm left surfing this site and asking questions in an effort to keep learning. Y'all are so good to me.

Keep asking. I grew up with guns, but did not speak 'gun' until a spent a lot of time with a bunch of marines and squids. Trust me, you don't want a Gunny Sgt. explaining the difference between a mag and a clip. (I generally involves push ups....and lots of them....)

Now, I forget that everyone does not speak 'gun'.

Never worry about that, MB, especially when it come to acronyms. We live in a world of acronyms, and no one can keep track of them all. If you're afraid to ask, you'll be left in the cold.

MB, I did not know what ND stood for either! I thought it was something like the answer, but I was not sure. Thanks for asking.:thumsup
