My journey to become an instructor

Being a recent transplant to the Orlando area from Toronto Canada, I have been trying to re-establish my career as a firearm insructor. Having over 12 years teaching self defense tactics in Canada I found myself needing to get re-certified in the U.S.(bummer).....well the journey has finaly begun.....I just completed the necessary steps to become a notary public and have one more session to complete my NRA certification for shotgun and home defense......I have already completed the pistol component. Then I will be in the position to offer Concealed weapon classes:dancingbanana

As I presently work in a gun shop I see the need as people are buying so many guns but don't have the slightest clue about the use, capabilities and limitations of the said firearms. Having taken the CCW class twice in florida once at a gun show and another at a well known gun range...... "Sh##t Strai#ht" .....all I can say is wow. I am presently developing my course plan....I am not going to say I am better than any other teacher out there, but I intend to ensure that my students get the training and knowledge that they expect me to share........As a personal oath to myself.... I promise not to sign off on any one unless they spend at least 1/2 a day with me at the range and demonsrtrate a lot more than firing a magazine at a target which seems to be the standard for most of the commercial classes.

In closing I will like to thank all the moderators and contributing members for sharing their vast knowledge. This forum has been a Godsend and a major contributing force to my vision.

Thank you Florida Concealed Carry Forum.....Oh yeah I am open to all advice so please feel free to add to this post.

My goal as an Instructor is to leave the student better than I met them and with a desire to learn more. I honestly don't think you can do more as you're limited to what you can do by the slowest student in the class.
I applaud your intentions and hope it works out for you. However, I wonder if people actually want better courses, or if it is just "doing the time" for most of them :(
I really think PaulJ hit it on the head, good intentions but I would suggest
that you offer a follow up course to the basic one to get CWFL.

Offer having a 40 hr block 20hr classroom and 20hr range, but I can almost guarantee most people will go where it's a faster course.
Just my .02
I really understand your responses. The question is whether my sole motivation is $$$$. Of course $$$ plays a part however I believe that there are people who want to learn and are willing to spend time to do just that. As stated..... this is a journey I plan to learn as it unfolds. I am willing to learn from all of you both positive and negative experiences alike.
Congrats and good luck Triniman :clap
Good Luck triniman, You are providing a good service to those that want to learn the right way.
Good luck to you Triniman. You are on the right track with a good mindset.

Always have an open mind to learn and you can only better yourself. :thumsup

I am no expert but I will say that most people will go to a 2-3 hour class. They will sit there, hear a few scenarios, focus on paperwork and then shoot a few rounds and be done. There is a local range that is doing just that and charging $65 a head. My neighbor went to this place (and I won't give the name of the place) and sat there for the class. I asked him if the instructor went over any type of techniques, hand to hand, knives, handgun retention or the like and he said "nope". He said he was no smarter leaving the place than he was going in.

That being said, I think if you offer a good class with lots of info and go into detail about different scenarios and whatnot and really help these folks learn something, you will be very successful!

IMO, there is NO WAY possible these "regular folks" could learn something of value in a 2 hour class. The class I took was from 8am til 5pm and was the most awesome experience. It was just PACKED with info, techniques, hand to hand, handgun retention, different scenarios in public, knife fighting, home scenarios, paperwork, 200 rounds on the range and more. I paid $100 for the class and never regretted one penny. I send everyone I know that needs the class to him and will continue to do so. I advised my neighbor to go to him but he wasn't interested in spending the extra money (his loss and he regrets it now).

I'm not trying to tell you how to run your business by any means. All I am saying is offer a good value and give them as much info as possible. If you are good at what you do, they will come regardless of the length or price of the course! It's an old saying but "you get what you pay for"!

I wish you the best with it all! Good luck!

My fiancee has her FWC Hunters Safety Certification (which counts towards proof of aptitude) and she received it in the 7th grade... at public school... without firing or handling a single firearm.
I remember that class when I was in school....
Also, a DD214 counts as proof of aptitude. There are people in the Military that I barely trust with a shovel, much less a gun and a license to carry it.

As far as your journey goes, I wish you nothing but the best.:thumsup Hopefully you can offer a class that people will be drawn away from the DMV style licensing classes, and make the students lives better for attending.

Ok here is my update.......three classes thus far....4 students max.....each $125 per person.....2 hours of "the talk" then at least 2 hrs of shooting, both with airsoft then at least 150 rounds of live ammo. If the students have more ammo then we shoot more...if they are advanced then we move to more tactical defence drills.....I try to find strengths....then weaknesses then build on both.......controlled doubles....both eyes open.....multiple adversaries etc....as I keep my classes small.... everyone.... I mean every one gets one on one through each discipline....I use my property....22 acres(staying away from certain public ranges....to many crazies) as a matter of fact I am in the process of beginning ladies only classes with a female instructor who just came on board.

As stated...this is a journey

I really hope this takes off for you-the class I took could have been much better.

Quick update....just bought a walther p22 for demonstration purposes.....It has a safety(none of my guns have one)....plus way cheaper to shoot than my 9mm or 40 cal. It is amazing that the classes that I held before bought me a gun:dancingbanana...plus makes me even better equipped....next on the list is a portable photo printer....god when will the spending end:puke......All in all I am really enjoying this journey.....
anyways here are some pics from one of my classes.

I'm wondering where the backstop behind those targets went?

Please don't tell me those woods in the background are being used as the backstop as it appears in the photos--------

Just because you can not see it does not mean it's not there:mad:

No the woods are not my backstop sir.....as a matter of fact...You may not see them.... but on my property line I have an 18ft high dirt backstop that the wife did not want showing for esthetic reasons.... therefore it was placed behind the tree line.... still on my property if that passes your approval.

A simpler question would be.....Just wondering if you are using a backstop?....or....Triniman I hope you are using a backstop?.....comes across better than the condescending tone implied in your response....oh almighty

I'm not sure why you'd think my question

"I'm wondering where the backstop behind those targets went? "

was in any a "condescending tone" when there is clearly no backstop behind the targets in the photos you submitted, certainly within sight or closer than that tree line.

It was a simple question that you have now clarified by your response.

I took issue to the following..............."Please don't tell me those woods in the background are being used as the backstop as it appears in the photos--------"

Ah well.......that's how I took it....my perrogative
Just read this, looked at the pics and was wondering exactly the same thing..Wheres the backstop??..One observance..how far away is the backstop from where the students are shooting..its amazing how high a projectile can go being only 1 inch off a target at 25 yds....take some advice..get closer to the berm....right up next to it if I might be so bold to suggest it..

Do I detect a little attitude going on here...my god..ask a simple question and it becomes offensive..hey, go get 'em tiger..
