While cleaning my Sig 226, I looked back into the hammer mechanism and I saw this "particulate" gunk which is hard to reach. Some of it looked "creamy" in nature like grease but some of it was clearly powder residue. How do you get it out? Does it need to come out?

try a nylon brush (cheap toothbrush) and some nitro solvent. put some nitro solvent on a q-tip apply it to the gunk. Let the nitro sit on the gunk for a few minutes then use the nylon brush to brush it away, wipe clean with a old tee shirt or non fuzzy cloth.

steve66 has replied with the same procedure I'd have given [ old toothbrush works wonders in these areas in the photos ].

I'd also suggest using non chlorinated break cleaner [ spray some on the brush and scrub as steve6 mentioned. I like the break cleaner as it dries with no residue left so more crud doesn't build up as quickly.
