Hi all,

I love the feel of the HK P30 in my hand. It's a bit pricey and I think I want to get away from the DA/SA. Does the S&W M&P 9 have a DAO trigger and how does it feel? It has interchangeable backstraps, right? Do you guys love it or what? And is it too big for concealed carry?

Thanks.

I have the full size M&P 9.

Mine felt too big for conceal carry until i got a holster made by Dave at Little Bear Holsters. What a difference a good holster makes!
Having said that, if I did it over I would likely opt for the cc model.

Yes to double action only and although it is my first and only polymer semi-automatic I find it smoother than a revolver DA.

I have also since purchased a Bersa .380 for conceal. I agree with those who think this pistol is a bargain and a well kept secret. Some here will consider it a cheap gun in more ways than price, I disagree.

Here is a picture of my Bersa with some custom grips by Marschal grips

Picked up a NIB M&P9 full size 1st of Feb to use as a trainer in my classes..Put the small backstrap on it for the female shooters and it has been superb. Probably only have bout 700-1000 round thru it and no failures of any kind. Extremely accurate and I hate to admit but since I received my Large Paw holster from Little Bear I have been carrying this little sweetheart about 15 hours a day and dont even know its there..My poor 5" 1911 is feeling left out and lonely right now but this little 9mm is a pleasure to shoot and easy to carry...The getting used to the trigger is the biggest thing for me..going from a 4lb SA with no trigger takeup to a 6lb DA with some takeup in the trigger is going to take a little practice but not much..its getting used to the trigger reset that takes some time..

My wife bought a M&P-9 last year and it has been a great shooter. She likes the small grip and I like the medium. The pistol has over 1,000rds through it and has never failed out of the box. It's on my night stand every night with a high capicity mag in it and a extra next to it. Most all the rounds shot through it have been reloads. I highly recommend to folks to take a look at it if your in the market for one. :drinks

Just to clarify a bit....while the M&P trigger is technically a DA trigger, it is NOT like the trigger on a traditional DA/SA gun. It is more like a Glock trigger than anything else, though a bit stiffer at 6.5lbs vs. 5.5 for the Glock.

I had an M&P 40 for about a year. Loved the way the gun functioned and performed, but the curve in the backstrap hit my hand in just the wrong place, making the trigger reach a bit uncomfortable for me. I sold it while attending a Tactical handgun class and bought another Glock. :D

The M&P series are excellent pistols. Dan Burwell in PA is the current M&P guru as far as trigger jobs and customizing.

I used mine for Brownie's course this past weekend and it ran great only had to mag problems and that was my fault for hitting the mag release. I am running the large back strap. We shot well over 1500 rounds threw it.I did not clean or lube till it was back home.I am not regretting buying this pistol. mater of fact I am thinking about picking up a full size one also (thanks SwampRat for letting me try it). I also own a glock26 and I prefer the m&p over it for the left handed features and the 2 extra shots for the mag with out adding a plate extension.

The M&P 9 trigger is not a DA trigger, because it has no hammer. Technically, a DA trigger cocks the hammer, then drops it.

The M&P, like the Glock or my SR9, is a pre-set striker trigger. Cycling the slide (manually or under recoil) partially cocks the striker. Pulling the trigger pulls the striker back to full cock, then releases it.

A lot of shooters in my local IDPA group have moved from the Glock to the M&P. Some of them have custom trigger jobs by a gunsmith. Others just do a fluff-n-buff. I know someone who has quite a few M&Ps...I think he's got the Pro, the L, compact in 9mm, and one in .45ACP. He likes the M&P, what can I say. :)

The deals S&W offers w/ free magazines and/or rebates are also pretty popular.
