So there are always several discussions going on about what size gun you are able to conceal, and the tradeoff between size and 'shootability.' My girlfriend recently ran into this issue, and I think we may have finally resolved it.

You see, she got her CWFL a few months ago, and wanted to get a gun that was concealable, yet fun to go shoot at the range as well. After going to the range and shooting several different guns, she decided on the Smith and Wesson M&P9c. I liked it as well, so we picked up a slightly used one with some Trijicon night sights on it.

Fast forward a couple months. It's now becoming apparent that the double-stack magazine is going to cause the M&P to be a little more than she can manage to conceal when the weather gets warm. So, we're stuck trying to find an alternative.

The issue we face is that the smaller and lighter you go with a firearm, the less fun it is to take to the range and put rounds in paper without getting sore. Choices like the Keltec PF-9 and the Kahr CW9 are notorious for being a little jumpy, and she didn't want to bump down to .380 as this is her home defense gun as well.

Finally, we stumbled across some of the slightly older stainless steel, single stack semi-autos (how's that alliteration for you?), such as the Smith and Wesson 3913 and ultimately the Kahr K9. After looking around for a while, the opportunity to purchase a used K9 presented itself and we jumped on it.

I am happy to report that we are extremely happy with the purchase. The store we bought it from reported that it had around 300 rounds through it from the previous owner, and from the action of the recoil spring, the gun still hadn't been fully broken in. Both my girlfriend and I shot it at the range later that week and found the recoil very manageable, though the trigger is a little long and heavy. There were no FTFs or FTEs with 150 rounds of Federal Champion and a couple rounds of Ranger SXT, but we're not taking any chances. She's holding onto the M&P for now until we finish breaking in the Kahr, but I think it is a great compromise that suits either one of us well.

When some extra funds become available, I think I'm going to send it into Kahr to get the Elite trigger system put in, but until then we'll adjust to the long pull.

Nice gun. I have a friend who is a Kahr fanboy. I do like Kahrs. The K9 is all steel however and weighs 23 oz empty. If I am going to carry a gun that heavy it would be a polymer with a high capacity. To me weight is more difficult to deal with than concealing a larger frame. So if I have to deal with the weight, it better have 10 or more rounds in it. I'm looking at the CM9 but I thought I might try a manual safety this time for more carry options which I think puts me in a PM9.

I had a K9 several years ago and it was sweet pistol. My only real complaint about it was that it seemed rather heavy for its size due to its all-steel construction. When the P9 came out I grabbed one and haven't been disappointed with it yet.

That's a fine looking gun... seems the recoil would be next to zero with that metal frame!

Bigtime K9 fanboy here. I agree it's the perfect CCW size (for me). The weight makes it a great shooter, and that's more important than how it feels strapped to your body. Between the balance, weight, low bore axis, and rubber grips, the recoil is almost a non-event in my opinion, for a 9mm this size.

Shot TJ's today. Love the all steel Kahrs. If I had a need for an ultra-slim belt gun, I wouldn't even consider anything else.

Missed ya today, bro. Too much fun.

I guess it isn't aftermarket trigger. Not sure it's worth the cost for 8th inch, I'd have to shoot one to make that decision

The weight was one of the major reasons we chose it, to minimize the effect of the recoil in a smaller package.
It's interesting how we differ in selecting guns. For me I can handle the extra recoil, if an additional 5-6 oz's actually provides that, over the 99.99% of the time when I am carrying and not shooting.

Yes, it's true that if it were solely a carry gun, weight would be the deciding factor. However, due to limited funds as a college student, the few guns I have also need to be my 'fun' range guns as well. A gun that I won't enjoy shooting takes away 50% of its value. Kind of like having a Smart-car, when you want to have something to go cruising at night with too.

Are you referring to the NYPD trigger? From what I've read on KahrTalk.com it's not all that different.
I'm referring to the Elite Trigger they offer through their custom shop. While 1/8" may not seem like much, it's that last little bit of the trigger pull that gets me because it's so far back in the guard, my finger almost has to slip to get it to break. That, combined with a lack of a set point before it breaks makes it feel just a little too sloppy to me.

Congratulations on a great gun. I own and love my poor man's Kahr, CM9. I have at least two thousand flawless rounds thru it. I love mine and know you will love yours too. I find the trigger light and smooth, if not long. Put Trijicon sights on it. Only negative is looooong reset.
Enjoy your gun...you clearly have a great girl friend.
