to pick up extra cash on the side i climb/cut down/ trim trees. today i was out on a clients property (about 12 acres) in north brevard county dropping an old white oak.

out of no where a huge : censored: pitbull (dirty, wild looking and not wearing a collar) appears and starts running at my crew and i with his teeth exposed. the two on the ground jump into the truck, i was just about to take the ladder down, so instead i quickly climbed back up it. the dog stopped at the foot of the ladder and barked and snarled. he made it clear he wanted me for lunch.:aarg at this point i place my hand on my glock 23 and consider drawing and shooting the animal.

i am a dog lover, i have 4. and i guess this dog was just protecting what he thought to be his territory. i didn't want to kill him for that. i was already out of harms way and saw no reason to end his life over this. I started up my chainsaw, and hooted and yelled and revved my saw until i scared him off. then made a quick retreat to the truck. ill go back for my ladder tomorrow. eff that!

this is the first incident in which i have had the thought to draw my weapon and it was by no means fun. anyone else have a similar story or anything to add? is what i did correct?

Should have drawn on it. The last time some dogs came at me, I drew immediately. I didn't fire, but was prepared to!

by the time he was within 30 feet of me, i was already up the ladder. had he been any closer, it would have been a shot and a shovel for fido. i guess i wasn't as fast as i thought i would be in such a event. im going to start working on my draw.

good job. a bunch of dogs wonder into my fenced in yard, if they don't bother me they are free to roam with out trying to get to the kitties. When they leave I close the gate my wife left open

My sister is having trouble with loose dogs coming after her dog at the park in Hawaii. I emailed to her to buy pepper spray and he concern was it would be too slow. Ya see, in Hawaii, no CC, so no training, no people in the know, no actual idea of what to do. Imagine, thinking that to deploy anything would be too slow for an oncoming dog! I told her to check the model available with a belt clip or even small hand helds(one in hand, one in pocket) Isn't it scary when people don't even know how to protect themselves against a dog? Thirty years ago she was a tough Jersey girl, she moved to Hawaii and is scared of dogs. That speaks volumes.

I have a F/M A.P.B.T. and walk her almost every evening. We were extending our boundries one afternoon, walking in an area new to us both. I walked by this one house and saw a Blue Pit walk past the corner of the house which caught be off guard for a moment, then I saw the 2nd one. All 3 dogs were aware of each other and my hand went right to grip of my Taurus 85. I was prepared if the situation turned south, but the other dogs were well trained and never left the back yard. There was no fence.

Get the good stuff. SABRE is available at many stores, including Bass Pro Shops. Don't bother with the crap Wal-Mart sells.

The little Sabre cans usually come with a belt clip, check bass pro, gander, army navys or at places online. Now if you want to go with something stronger, get Fox Labs or Vexor, if it's just dogs, Sabre should do the trick. If she wears a shorter shirt, a pocket or velcro attachment around the hand will be suitable. They cost anywhere from 9 - 15$ if you can, get 2, one to practice with on a rock once or twice, just so she knows what to expect and then the other for regular carry.

Get the good stuff. SABRE is available at many stores, including Bass Pro Shops. Don't bother with the crap Wal-Mart sells.

It should be fine actually, you don't need something super strong to fend off a vicious dog.
