That was then..this is now.
The Senate and politics are totally different now.
So are the demographics of our population, and the number of "assault weapons" currently possessed by law-abiding, responsible Americans. AR's for example, weren't really a thing for the country at large in 1994. Double-stack, 10+-round handguns, and lawfully-carrying citizens were rarities. Today, they are common, if not the norm.

No. They aren’t. Many of the same people who were there then are still there now including Sleepy who is at the wheel instead of on the senate floor. Pelosi has been there since 1987. Several members in the senate are also of equal long-standing.

Gun Culture 2.0 is here and in full effect. The bulk of firearms purchases are for self-defense and defense of property and community. People realize that the government is incompetent, and malevolent.

The Fudd is derided and mocked. If someone's buying a rifle, it's an AR, if someone's buying a handgun it's a GLOCK or something similar.

Common use by a long-shot.

The truly sad part is that Congress believes an assault ban will actually accomplish something positive and worthwhile.
It won't. (and it didn't the last time they tried it either.
If you think Congress believes that this bill would accomplish something positive, you're deluding yourself. This is a power grab, plain and simple. Congress should rename itself. From now on, I will refer to Congress as the Politburo.
