When you hear a noise in you house, do you reach for a pistol or a shotgun? If you reach for a shotgun, do you keep yours loaded with slug or buckshot?

I will go for my handgun..It's what is close, easier to maneuver, pie the rooms, more rounds with less chance of collateral damage, and what I practice the most with. The shotgun is loaded and ready but doesnt sit on my nightstand. The shotgun is loaded with #00 buck..3rd round is a slug. If time allows and circumstances dictate, I'll go to shotgun. Wakened out of a dead sleep, I'm going to my pistol.

My preference is to use the pistol, Rem 870 shotgun is next to the bed. No shell in the chamber of the shottie, gotta rack it to use it.

I prefer a hand held over a shoulder fired weapon for house use. If I have to step outside my home for some reason, the shottie will get that duty.

Shottie loaded with #4 buckshot, slugs in the shell holder permanently residing on the stock.

Holstered .45 (cocked & locked) on the nightstand (I can find it easy with the night sights glowing). Mossberg 500 Persuader on the far side of the stand--gotta rack it to play it (#00 buck low recoil).

As I'm reaching for the handgun and Surefire light the two little yappers will take care of all the light work, leaving the survivor(s) for me. Same as for Brownie--shotgun goes outside. Ms. RoadGlider would not appreciate big holes in her walls. :smack

I have two small children in the house, so I don't have a loaded shotgun (Or any shotgun, period). My hand is immediately going for the gun safe that holds my Sigma, which it itself has its' slide locked back and ready for a full magazine that I have in a separate location (Under my pillow :D). I've timed myself, and I'm locked and loaded in less than ten seconds.

Eventually, when the boys are far older, I plan on having a shotgun, and probably an M4 class Evil Black Rifle :)rolf) ready to rock for home defense. By then I hope to also have a 1911-class .45 specifically set up for night-time home defense and tons of fully loaded magazines, ready for instant use. :thumsup

For an unidentified noise in the house, a handgun is usually my first choice. If the dog is going nuts, the big gun comes out. A High Standard 8113 with the magazine loaded with one #6 field load followed by five #1 buckshot loads with a large caliber handgun for back-up.

If I hear something in the middle of the night, my hand goes immediately to the .38spl because its close. If I wake up and determine something is really wrong I roll out of the bed (long roll because its a big bed) and reach for the 12ga pump leaning against my wall, about 4 feet from the edge of the bed. It sits on an empty chamber with 4 rounds of 00 Buck in the tube infront of a single 1oz. slug. Not a critter in this state (2 legged or otherwise) thats going to be standing after that.

My edc G26 is on my nightstand and my M&P .40 is underneath sp they are closest. The Mossberg 12g (00 buck) is in the closet and I will grab that if I have time. If not I go for the pistols and the wife goes for the shottie.

bout the same here. if there were a problem, id take the 9mm and go solve it while the wife gets behind the bed with the 12 guage and calls 911.

When I am home, my 1911 is on the nightstand, but my 10.5" M4 is behind the nightstand against the wall. I was always taught to fight with your pistol to get to your rifle, not the other way around.
I do understand the idea of fighting with what you are most comfortable with, however, and dont see a particularly wrong answer to this question.
But I have a follow on question for you shotgun guys.... How long is the shotgun you are going to?

#3 buckshot in a 20 gauge.

On the plus side, I live alone and no one has a key to my place, so IFF is not needed, anyone moving around in the dark is definitely a hostile. On the downside, I live in a townhouse with neighbors on either side, so over-penetration is a consideration.

A shotgun is the better choice for me. I won't ever clear my house, I'll just take a defensive position at the bedroom door and call 911. I don't have to worry about wearing my glasses or aiming in the dark or engaging multiple intruders or an intruder charging up the stairs at full speed ... I just point and shoot. Multiple times. :D

(As one of my tactical shotgun instructors jokingly quipped, what's the only reason to have a handgun in the house? To give you time to get to your shotgun. )

I have a Glock 22 with an M3 tac light sitting on the nightstand, which is my 'go-to' gun for bumps in the night. If my outside dog is going ballistic (the indoor ankle-biters bark at everything...and nothing ), I'll probably get the Bushmaster M4 out of the safe for dealing with exterior threats. If I have to take up a defensive position inside the house, I break out the Remington 870 loaded with Federal Low-Recoil 00 buck and some Brenneke slugs on the sidesaddle.

I have my 357 and 9mm next to each other in the drawer, so it depends on where my hand goes. If needed, I have a 12 ga w/ 00 buck, not racked. This is assuming my attack cats have not rendered then limb from limb:rolf

Excellent question Buckley!

This debate has been known to go on and on. This is in my own opinion. I have my pistol not on the night-stand. But hidden within easy arm reach. I do not want someone breaking in, me not knowing and getting to my pistol before I wake.

I will use and reach for my pistol first. Easier to manuever through-out the house.. At least my house. Harder to grab, and a greater capacity. The wife on the other hand will grab the shotgun filled with #00B and 5 on the sleeve. Rack to play.

There is one other thing that will happen that I dont really share. But when she ducks points and rack, if the "perp" does not exit the premises, I will "search" and attempt to "destroy". She then takes cover with shotty in hand and knows what to do ( I do not want anything to happen to her under any circumstances so she gets the shotgun).

A shotgun in a "controlled" area of not a lot of "stretch" room is more effective than a pistol)

Now IMO I will not get the shotgun if this fight happens to be taken outside. (Legally being able, fear of safety comes into play, so chances are I will fight to the end). Less range with a shotgun and more chance of improper destruction to something not intended for.

I go through different a scenerio, and the best course of action IMO each and every night with the wife. I go through the house when I have gotten home and have time, each day, to physically go through the "played out" scenerio, and try to find a better solution. Now the best thing that I can recommend is to do what you feel is best IYO and what you are most comfortable with.

Whether you think you can, or cant... You are RIGHT!!
