I thought I would stir the pot a little bit first .... :D

I like my 1911 Combat Commander because I have carried one since the early 70's.

I like the fact that it has not one, not two, but three types of safeties. (Thumb, Grip, Half-Cocked)

As I understand it the Glock has none?

The 1911 is a solid built, proven, reliable, man stopper that has been around for a long time. In my opinion, if you have a 1911, you can't go wrong.

Now, that is MY opinion, and there are many here who swear by their Glocks, and I respect their opinion.

I would carry a 1911 over a Glock, but not over the XD :D

I like the overall grip and and the grip safety on the 1911. I like the added capacity of the Glock, but dont care for the grip ergonomics

1. Trigger safety
2. Firing pin safety
3. Drop safety

No manipulation required for them to work.
I will correct my post:

The Glock has three safeties, Trigger safety, Firing Pin Safety, and Drop Safety that " No manipulation required for them to work ", which means the gun controls the safety, not the shooter. :D

I have owned both and found that the Glock was the gun that fit me best.

You also are giving us a bit of a false dilemma as there are a number of good quality guns out there that are worth consideration. I found the Glock, learned it and have no reason to move from it. If I had the same knowledge of a Sig or an XD I would use them.

They both have strong and weak points. Either weapon will do its job if you do yours. Personally, I just find the grip angle on the Glock uncomfortable, so I would stick with my Colt Lightweight Commander, if that was the only choice. Personal comfort and competence go hand in hand.

Addition:

I have to add my next Glock will be one of the SF models because it has a VERY similar grip angle to the 1911.
I purchased one of the first G21SF in the area of WA I was in and the first two rounds, off hand, made one hole at 21 feet. My brother did the same thing right after me.
I only ditched it because I needed the trade value towards my Wilson.

I'm telling you, that Wilson needs to GO (to me!!!)

I've owned both and carried both for a lot of years. If I had to choose only one of the two, I'll take the Glock (and I just bought a new 1911). Low maintenance, high capacity, legendary reliability (regardless of caliber). What's not to love?

A 1911 is what you show your friends. A Glock is what you show your enemies. :D
