I've been shooting revolvers for years, but I began thinking about making a sidestep to autos for concealed carry. From discussions here, I've been thinking about Glocks and the XD pistols from Springfield Armory, so today I rented a Glock 19 at the local range. I love the way the pistol shoots, but in going through 50 rounds, I had the magazine fall out several times.

According to the people at the range, this pistol is only about 1 month old, and the magazine came with it from the factory. Naturally, after the first incident I was very careful to fully seat the magazine and to not accidentally push the release with my trigger finger while shooting (I'm a lefty). Is this a common problem with Glocks?

Glock dropping the mag.

NO, it not a common problem for a GLOCK. I have never had such problem a with any my 6 Glocks and the 45 Glock magazines I use. But, for an abused and poorly maintained range rental gun, I'd say it is probably likely to happen.

It is a more common problem for southpaws, as the trigger finger can come in contact with the mag release button...just part of the leftie curse. :aarg

I'm still using the non drop free original mags in my first gen that's just reached the 100,000 rd count. The mags have never been taken apart or cleaned since 1988, the mag release has never failed to keep these older well worn mags in the gun.

None of the 16 glocks I own have ever dropped a mag inadvertently, my guess is it's user error or something definately defective on the gun. If the range rental were defective, they would have known of the issue before the month was up on the rentals, leaving user error as Deadeye mentions as the source of the problem [ damned lefties ]:D

Now, as for lefties and glocks, one of our instructors who is a federal agentand shoots left handed has used a g19 for several years through tens of thousands of rounds without any issues like this reported.

Thanks for the inputs.

Deadeye, Brownie, as I indicated in my original post, after the first instance I was very careful about magazine insertion and keeping my trigger finger from hitting the release. Anything is possible, but I don't it was user error this time.

I can't leave it at this. I really liked shooting that pistol.

Either it's user error or just simply a fluke with the Glock. My Glock 22 is flawless. I have 4k+ rounds through with 0 issue's ever. Got a buddy with a 1st gen and he claims 0 problems as well.

Glocks are as solid a firearm as they come. You def won't go wrong with a Glock purchase!

Remember too, Steve, you're talking about a range rental gun/mags....hard use from lots of folks who normally don't have a clue.

That said, in 18 years of shooting/carrying Glocks, I've never had a mag drop that I didn't want to drop.

Buy with confidence.

Yesterday I saw 4 9mm [very balooned and swollen] spent casings from someone trying to fire 9mm rounds in a .45cal. It was amazing that the whole round did not just fall out thru the barrel. Must have been holding the weapon up correctly.......BUT....just because grandpa fired a rifle 60 years ago in the war does not make him "gun smart" today. Very lucky folks inside of the range with him.
