So I consiering making my first knife purchase. I don't mean that I don't own a knife, its just that I want to move up to a serious knife.

I would like peoples thoughts on good knives for the value in the following price ranges

60 - 125

125 - 200

Also please give me your thoughts on fixed, auto, folding, etc.

If you are wondering how one could live with a serious knife, I hate the outdoors and therefore do not hunt, fish, camp, boat, etc. I know that is not the camp most of my fellow forumites fall into, but hey to each his own.

I could write a book on this topic alone. Some have.

My latest was a ZT 0400, very reasonably priced.

This is what I keep in my truck above my visor.

I have a bunch of Benchmade knives as well.

Mr. Miller makes an excellent product. Is the Stratofighter OTF available yet?

Still have mine that was issued to me by the USMC back in 1970 TS. It's been a workhorse of a knife. Made from 1095 tool steel and heat treated properly, the 1095 is one of the best all around tool steels you can use.

Mine has been used for almost everything you could imagine and doesn't look anywhere near as nice as the one in the photo.

I doubt it Mr. Buckley, but let me relate one story on how tough that knife is here as well.

It was 1982 and I was on my motorcycle and had a rear tire go flat [ sidewall blowout so it had to be replaced and couldn't be plugged on the road ]. I needed to get the tire off and had one of those s shaped tools that.s supposed to take the tire off the rim.

Well, that tool is a piece of crap, it's not going to work like it's intended to and I'm getting seriously aggravated to get the tire off the rim and go get a new tire.

I have the K-Bar on the bike, so I get it out and find that the tire has several very strong steel bands where it beads to the rim. It's all I can do to get the first half inch of of the blade between the rim and tire and I can't apply enough force to cut through the steel bands.

I apply lateral stress to the knife edge and feel it start popping bands. Figure I'm going to ruin this knife I've had since the RVN, but at that point I don't care, I'm on a mission and seriously aggravated.

Popped the steel bands one at a time and finally got the tire cut off the rim and off to the bike shop for a new tire. The K-Bar edge where it was cutting the bands had one small, almost unnoticed chip in it, the blade was still perfectly flat and the lateral torgue I applied didn't twist the blade whatsoever.

It was no worse for wear after resharpening the blade a few times, the nick was gone, it was that small. About any other knife would have snapped the blade.

It wasn't the first time that knife has gotten me out of trouble and saved the day. It was retired a long time ago, having served me admirably whenever I needed it.

The K-Bar is one of my most prized knives in my collection. It's got a history of tough use service and it deserves to be oiled and put up for as long as I own it now.

Rvrctyrngr, what you are describing here is simply called OCD :rolf

The tell sign sign is the use of the term "my first custom"
