The weight of a bullet is expressed in terms of "grains", the smallest unit of weight in the English system. This method of measuring weight relied on the relationship between the number of grains of wheat that were equal to one pound: 7000 grains.

Caliber is the term used to describe the diameter of the actual bullet or projectile in the cartridge in terms of hundredths of an inch (English units) or millimeters (metric units).

The "ACP" suffix appended to some auto loading pistol cartridge designations refers to "Automatic Colt Pistol", even though the application may be for a semi-automatic, rather than fully automatic, self-loading firearm.

The cylinder of a Smith & Wesson revolver rotates counter-clockwise; that of a Colt rotates clockwise.

I think the "automatic" part of the name comes from the "autoloading" aspect of the semi-auto pistol design, and wasn't meant to indicate any fully automatic firearm.

Interesting info about the revolvers. I'm not a wheelgun person, and I never knew that.

Here's how the gauge of a shotgun is determined.

The gauge of a shotgun barrel was originally determined by the number of identically-sized lead balls that have the same diameter as the bore, and weigh one pound. Example: Let's say the bore of a 20 gauge is .6 of an inch. It would take 20, six tenths of an inch lead balls, to weigh 1 pound. Using the same numbers, if one were to build a gun with a bore of .675 it would take 16 lead balls that size to weigh 1 pound--- thus a 16 gauge. Oops !! - what about a 410? Truth is a 410 is not actually a gauge. It is a caliber... .410 inches bore. Applying the math to this would make a 410 shotgun actually a 67 gauge.... so next time you go to buy your 410 shells ask for some 67 gauge shells and see what happens :laughing.

One more:

What caliber is a 9MM?

Millimeter is the same measurement as caliber except it is expressed in metric. Here's the magic number - 1 inch equals 24.5 millimeters. Setting up the ratio of 1 inch is to 24.5 millimeters as "X" is to 9MM the answers is..367 caliber. Just slightly (.01inches) larger than the 357 or 38.

As long as we're talking about caliber, let's remember that the terminology isn't always that exact. For example, a .38 SP and a .357 magnum actually use bullets with exactly the same diameter. That's why you can shoot .38 SP in a .357 magnum revolver.

And if I remember correctly, a .30 caliber rifle bullet is about .308 diameter, and a .32 ACP pistol bullet is only .311 diameter. A lot closer than the common terminology would suggest.

OK, everyone has heard of a .30-06, but did you know that there's also a .30-03? And that neither the 06 nor the 03 has anything to do with the size of the round?

Or that Glock23 doesn't actually own... Oops, sorry. :D Someday.
The .30-03 and .30-06 were named for the dates of introduction, 1903 and 1906, respectively.

The Nock Volley gun was a seven-barreled, smoothbore flintlock gun developed in the late 18th century and briefly used by the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic Wars. The idea was that sailors would climb into their rigging and fire the gun down onto the deck of the other ship.

Unfortunately, the recoil was so intense, it could break the shoulders of most shooters, and possibly cause them to fly off the rigging. Also, there was the risk of setting fire to their own rigging, being a blackpowder gun.

All seven barrels fired at once through a single flintlock.
