I rented a .22 today while at the range, and had 8 out of 100 that wouldn't go bang. I normally shoot .45 and have not had any that wouldn't fire out of probably 1000 rounds. Did I get unlucky with the boxes of .22 that I bought or is this fairly typical of the .22 ammo? (ammo was Winchester Wildcat 22, btw)

FWIW, I'm fairly certain the gun was nice and clean and in good working order, from the inspection I gave it before starting.

I probably would have shot more, but I got sick of clearing the chamber and just left after the first two boxes. :thumbsdwn

You don't say what gun it is? I am guessing Sig Mosquito or Walther P22. Both are pretty ammo sesative but your range gave you the wrong ammo for the gun.

I have a Mosquito and love it. I only run CCI mini mag plinkers (FMJ) feeds them great. Just have to watch the ammo.

They only let you use their ammo for rental guns, so I wasn't given a choice, just handed the boxes of ammo.

What ammo should they be using/renting?

When you say that the rounds wouldn't go bang, what exactly was the problem? Were the rounds properly chambered? Was there a firing pin dent on the rim of the failed round? If the dent was there and it didn't discharge, then it's the ammo's fault. If there was a very light dent, I'd say it was the gun's fault. If there was no dent, then it could be either an ammo problem- failure to feed properly because ammo is out of spec- or a problem with the gun.

The rounds were chambered fine, and all had dents from the firing pin. I figured it to be bad ammo... just wondering if the 8/100 rounds is normal for the manufacturer and/or caliber.

I agree that it appears to be bad ammo, and 8 out of 100 sounds like a high failure rate. I'd expect about 1 from the .22 ammo I use (Remington).

I usually shoot either CCI ( any variety) or Federal in the 350? round bulk box. There are lots of good 22s out there. Unfortunately 22s tend to be finicky about the ammo they like. It's trial and error to find one that your gun will like. Next time you rent a 22 tell them you want a different ammo.

That is very good from Remington or any other milk carton ammo. Either one of my .22's will ftf about one per mag (10%+/-).

Step up to CCI or any other better boxed ammo and I'll go 99% or better.

I was once told that the milk carton ammo is sold in bulk because it fails to make spec to be good enough for boxed ammo.

That said, one of my old .22's has to have the firing pin flushed pretty well as it get stuff back up in it and will start producing a lot of FTFs. Range rental may not have been cleaned well back in the firing pin area. Or you were just shooting typical bulk ammo.

airhead probably hit it on the nose with the above IMO. 8% seems high even for bulk ammo in my experience shooting my Marlin 39a or the Walther P22.

Steve, FTF = Failure to Fire. I thought that is what the problem was. Either gun or ammo can cause a ftf.
1. hard primers
2. bad firing pin (I actually wore a rimfire FP down about 1/8" from new over the years.)
3. dirty firing pin channel
4. weak hammer spring
5. bad ammo (defective primer)

I find #3 most common followed by #5 only in bulk rimfire ammo.

I got my first .22 53 years ago. It's a JC Higgins bolt action. I still have it. I also have a Beretta .22 Model 75 semi-auto and a Ruger 10-22 Semi-auto rifle. I've used all sorts of ammo and have NEVER had a single FTF. NEVER.
A rented gun, probably was worn. I have a few 500 round boxes of Winchester ammo right now and haven't had any problems.

What sense of FTF do you mean here? If it's failure to fire, then I'm stunned. 53 years and never a round that didn't go off? I've never had very many failures, but I've certainly had a few.

May or may not be the ammo...

We normally shoot Remington 550 bulk milk carton stuff from Wally World that used to sell for 9 bucks but now is $16. We shoot it at CAS Rimfire matches in Heritage revolvers, Ruger Revolvers and two Henry Lever, Std model and a Golden Boy.

We rarely, if ever have a misfire during these matches which have a lot of speed shooting. However, last Saturday at a match, one of my buddies who shoots a Golden Boy & a Ruger said he gets about 1 round out of every 10 that gets hit but won't fire. He uses the same ammo. So, go figure.

All our WM are out in this area, so I had to order from Midway last week, some Aguila SubSonics, as that was all they had in stock.

I have also had very good luck with Wolf Match in Ruger 10-22 and Browning Buckmark. But, the cheap stuff also works fine too.
