y'all famil with the metal-detector lookin things at retail stores?

theyre always givin me away, some more than others (walgreens goes off 100% of the time)

few people (sheep) notice, but i've come to realize that when someone 'beeps' on the way in, theyre probably totin'...

i dont understand why they pick up non-tagged non-retail items (like guns, but not keys/cell/etc). It must be like a derivative of a metal detector that mostly picks up unscanned tags but also some heavy metal?? like an accidental gun-detector? or is it a multipurpose thing??

i'm always wonderin when the day will come that loss prevention wants to chase me down to find out what set off their theif-detecting-duhickey.

I can see it now: "Dude, all I have is THIS" *lifts shirt*

just kidding about the lift.

any thoughts?

Yet to happen to me - i have been in Walgreens many times and nothing. Grocery stores, Walmart etc. all quiet. I guess if a store manager questions you, you could show your CWP and leave it at that.

Really you don't HAVE to show them anything. I wouldn't. Beep or no beep. They can call the cops and I'll wait, and if the officer asks if he can search me I'll tell him no. I'll answer any questions he asks, but not consent to a search.

yeah well, I think the machines vary, maybe in sensitivity? Like I said, some stores it doesn't do it. But some I've proved the theory...

I'm not worried about being questioned, it was a joke.

My thinking is the license should be enough for a store manager or in store security. Why involve the police if you don't have to? As for telling the police they can't search you - good luck with that and enjoy your ride downtown. :thumsup

I've never had a firearm set off a store alarm for product tags.

GlockComa, are you sure it's the gun setting off the alarms here?

Brownie
absolutely positively.

I started taking notice what stores (which I frequent) it happens in, and tested it (left gun in truck)

even showed my gf, now it's like an inside joke when we walk into a store and she clears the beeper and I'm settin it off..

I used to think the same thing, then a clerk told me it was my shoes, she even demagnetized them for me. (they put it in the heel while assembling them).
On another forum about a year ago this was happening, some firearm manufacturers are putting those security strips in their firearms. Break your's down and see if you find anything.
There was a big Bru Ha Ha about the government tracking you....... I believe in the end there was a consensus that the manufacturers put them there to prevent shrinkage.

I seem to remember this same exact thing happening before. I read, somewhere on the 5 boards I subscribe too, that a guy's glock was doing this exact same thing. Turns out he left the price sticker on his spare mag as to mark them. The price sticker was the metal kind that set off those detectors.
So check for RFID or magnetic strip stickers on your gear, holster too.

Then again, some clothing lines like Old Navy sew in those same tags into there clothes, a thick or stiff white tag in there could be doing it.

With reasonable suspicion law enforcement has the right and duty to search you. If you refuse, you can be subject to arrest. Is it worth the drama?

If that thing went off, and loss prevention asked to search me, I'd politely refuse, tell them I've stolen nothing, and if they want me searched they'd need to call a cop.

I'd show the cop my CWP and tell him that I feared showing my weapon to the loss prevention guy would be considered brandishing, and was not willing to risk my CWP because of a loss prevention over-achiever.

That should be that.

Well said, I also do not agree with acting like a hard ass to the police they really don't tolerate that. A lawyer might get you out of it but it sure sounds like a lot less trouble to just eat your own ego and be a nice guy. Being polite and helpful will 99% of the time get you sent along on your way.

Dude, you got a tag on you somewhere....probably your shoes. I go through readers several times a day, Walgreens being one of them, with various chunks of weaponry on me at any given time. Never been 'beeped', except when I had a new wallet on me....tag in the wallet.

They're RFI readers, not metal detectors.

Sounds to me something on your gun/gear is magnetized & setting it off.
Have you tried different guns?
:rolf I could just picture having an arsenal of guns in the car, and walking in and right back out of the store 50 times while changing the gun out each time to test it. Talk about funny looks. :rolf ( I know what you mean, I just had a funny mental image.)

Sounds reasonable. Maybe I tend to push my luck a little much.

All well and good, and correct...However....there had better be an officer on the scene, because as sure as I'm sitting here, if some LP dude tried to 'detain' me, it would quickly become a VERY bad day for him. Not happening.
