Folks,
S&W have Shot Announced a new pistol, with a totally new gas operating system...

If you shoot with someone who has one, I recommend wrap around safety glasses and a face shield and body armor and protective gloves...just to stand near this one.

Who notes the results of S&W being creative are questionable. It took them until the 39-2 to get a single stack DA/SA pistol functional, and it was still too big.

It's a 5.7, useless for SD and basically a toy to play with that takes expensive often unavailable ammo

The 39-2 was a first gen attempt to build a semi auto from a company known only for their revolver builds prior to it's release. Initially designed with the military contract in mind, it was passed over and became a civilian available pistol.

Not bad for a revolver companies first attempt to build a semi [ one of two 1st gen's the other being the model 59

It moved well out of my threshold of carry simply by virtue of its length and height. Too long and too tall to carry comfortably and effectively. Target ammo is well past my price break.

I'll disagree with that as a categorical declaration - "useless."

My wife finds the FNH Five-seveN much easier / comfortable to shoot than a 9-mm pistol. Loaded with a full mag, it's 20+1... and that's with a flush-mounted mag, not an extended mag. Even fully-loaded, it's very lightweight and easy to handle. Low recoil means staying on target.... with 20 rounds to spare. It won't be a good day for a bad guy on the receiving end.

That said... the dude in the video claims that their new pistol "solves the problems" of the 5.7 cycling. Ummm..... what problems? My FNH 5.7 has 1,600 rounds through it (not a huge number) without a single malfunction. And I've never heard of any problems with the 5.7, functionally.

I am skeptical about a multi-part / moving parts barrel.

The ammo has been scarce and expensive lately. I bought my stash for $20 / box. Though, we may see increased supply and lower prices, as this caliber seems to be gaining popularity lately.

Developed as a rifle round, specifically with ammo that would penetrate vests. In a pistol, the ballistics fall short of the rounds original design. Not to mention you can't buy the original ammo legally anymore in the US.

It's a toy, that FN is HUGE and not conducive to carrying concealed. They may have a bad day, but that can be stated about the lowly 22lr as well.

13 people had a last day at Fort Hood at the hands of a murderous terrorist armed with a 5.7 - Though, I hate to use that as an example or "proof" of efficacy of the round.

Is it "ideal?" Hardly. Which caliber IS "ideal?" But, like with any caliber.... shot placement is paramount. Having 21 on tap helps, too.

Would I carry it? No. It's kind of awkwardly proportioned for that. Though it is freakishly light.

As a home defense weapon for wifey? She likes it. I like it. And in my hands, I think it would also work quite well. Though, for my own HD pistol, I have the FNH FNP-45T with 15+1 rounds of .45-ACP on tap. But, if I happened to grab the 5.7... I'd be good to go, I think.

From a FiveseveN pistol or a Ruger 57, velocity in a 40-gr load drops to closer to a velocity of 1600 fps and muzzle energy closer to 220 ft-lbs.

The 380 develops about 199. 9mm about 350.

I would not carry / own it simply because I don't really feel the need to stockpile yet another caliber.
So far, it's...

9mm
12 Ga
.338 Lapua Magnum
6.5 Creedmoor, and...
22 LR, which is more of a "Toy Glock" given it's overall weight and "usefulness". (Translation: Not sure why I bought it?)
(Additional translation: Will be a gift to my oldest nephew as soon as I obtain permission from my sister and BIL.)

This new model by s+w seems to be put into a platform more conducive to concealed carry. The 5.7 was designed to replace the 9mm. That was 1990. 33 years later, it's not only not replaced the 9mm in that time by any police agency in a pistol. The federal agencies nor any local lea I can find carry that caliber in any platform in pistol configuration.

I will admit that it's curious that it seems to be enjoying a resurgence in the public interest with Ruger and now S&W making 5.7 pistols. For a long time it was just the FNH pistol.

Yeah exactly. I don't believe 9mm is going anywhere in my lifetime, probably several times over.
It is probably the most popular (by numbers produced) than any other caliber?

5.7 is certainly a niche caliber, I think. But I bet if the ammo became more available, more people would enjoy shooting it. It's a fun caliber to shoot.

Always thought the 5.7 and the 357 sig were something I would like to shoot. Just because. Don't care about owning either.

The last time I bought 5.7, I paid $18 / box of 50 (FNH brand) from Palmetto State Armory. That was in November 2016. It's nearly double that now. And it's come DOWN from the peak.

Unless that ammo price comes down significantly, ain't nobody gonna buy those new 5.7 pistols.

.357 Sig is a great round and some loads are pretty potent energy wise.

OF COURSE….because S&W has such a well deserved and widely know reputation for building guns that blow up because of design flaws
