Due to some events that have taken place in our neighborhood, my wife and I have decided to purchase two Glocks to protect ourselves and our family. I have some questions about the legality/requirements of obtaining a permit. So here's my situation... I've had a couple issues in my past, 05/2011 possession of 20g or less of cannabis and 07/2012 possession of drug paraphernalia. Both times I ended up with adjudication withheld and completed probation within two weeks with no issues. Since then I have taken care of things and would like to avoid the whole "guns and drugs don't mix spiel". I understand the laws are pretty strict and it seems as though I am not eligible (I'm a pilot and find it interesting that I may not be able to conceal carry, but I can command an aircraft with 200+ people), but I would like to get some feedback from others, possibly from those who may have been in a similar situation. Thank you in advance for any info.

As I recall, it is a minimum of three years:

(e) Has not been committed for the abuse of a controlled substance or been found guilty of a crime under the provisions of chapter 893 or similar laws of any other state relating to controlled substances within a 3-year period immediately preceding the date on which the application is submitted;
If it has all been adjudicated, then perhaps you may be able to get it sooner.
I would definitely include all copies of your court paperwork showing that everything is complete when you file your application.

Laws are ambiguous to say the least relating to who you are and your profession, you make a mistake and your marked forever, with that being said and my background in the law profession I'd counsel you to get a big dog to protect your home, people don't realize the ramifications both short and long term once that firearm goes bang. I've seen professionals come b4 me with tears n their eyes knowning their life and assets with never be the same because they over reacted to a situation, better make sure it's a life and death situation and you can prove it without a shadow of a doubt. I tell people if you can RUN !! If not you and the perp have a serious problem ....good luck n your quest for protection but don't stimulate a situation that can be resolved with conversation ....

If in fact the situation does take place in the home that's a different ballgame but I didn't read it as home invasion, the terminology "protect ourselves and our family" within the dwelling is another responsibility to the people in the home that the gentlemen must also consider, I hope he and she considers some type of instruction in firearms b4 taking this step to protect themselves wth Glock pistols. In stressful Chaotic conditions many things can go wrong if one has no background to deal with same, but to each their own ...
Thank you all for the advice. There have been a series of both car and home break-ins recently in our area so we'd like to have the piece of mind, especially since I typically don't get back from my flights until midnight or later and that's apparently when the crimes have been taking place. I understand what you're saying panfisher1 and would never pull a weapon unless that was my absolute last resort. Although I have been around/shooting weapons for many years, we will be taking more than just the concealed weapons class as I know the ramifications involving the use of a firearm are very serious and arming ourselves with the proper knowledge could come in handy one day. Again, thank you all for expressing your concerns and the for advice.

Recently from a flight from the west coast I sat next to a Delta airline pilot and had a wonderful conversation
Regarding the arming of pilots on aircraft .... They don't pay airline pilots enough for what they do and what they are responsible for ....good luck on your quest for peace and tranquility

One thing in your favor (re: the additional training of which you spoke) is your location. There are a number of excellent trainers (some on this forum -and probably some others), in your area that can provide the training - over and above the basic 'concealed carry class' - that you seek. You are right to plan for training that is more than what you will get in a concealed carry class. You might check the 'Training' section of this forum.
Keep in mind that it is not necessary to wait until you have a Concealed Weapon or Firearm License in hand before seeking such training. It would, however, be best to undergo such training with your planned carry gun. Getting the training prior to your license would be a good step.

They most definitely do not. It's an long term investment that, if all goes well, will pay really good in the end.

Legally, you don't need a license to train and have a gun, and not to defend yourself or your family at home or in your car. Having a license makes a lot of things easier in several situations.
of course, I would recommend learning all you can about firearms laws, guns, and training. The dog... as my dog is part of a welcome cometee to strangers, I don't recommend one for more than a pet and alarm system..if. conversation... well..I'm all for it and in fact good at it... but I'm not for talking when awakened in the middle if the night .. in fact I'm a bit of a cranky midnighter... so cannot give you any advice on that.

I have a friend who is still a pilot (a series of heart attacks have grounded me). As a pilot, he carries on the job and has Federal Air Marshall status while on the job. Ironically, even as a former LEO he can't get a CCW permit as he live in The People's Republic of Maryland.
A dog makes a great alarm system. Nobody gets into my place without my Toy Poodle letting me know. Sadly, he's had some dental problems so he relies on me to confront any "guests". Poor little guy couldn't even bite ankles. Maybe "gum" them to death.
