That's great, Buckley! I think the extra attention to the areas you mentioned will be most valuable. I know of at least one piece of information my wife got in her course which was factually inaccurate and in complete opposition to the statute.
Funny....I've heard that more from LEOs than from anyone else....still do!I assisted in a class last month and a student kept asking about the three step rule for a car. There is so much inaccurate information out there.
Courses like yours should be the rule, not the exception. The course deviates from many courses providing similar certification as there is considerable attention given to statutory analysis, case law, and common law.
While I appreciate the idea, that would not be ideal since most instructors aren't lawyers. Non-lawyer instructors have to be very careful about what they say so that their comments are not considered the unauthorized practice of law.Courses like yours should be the rule, not the exception.
That's scary, Gold, as that has never been a statute on the books in FL.It's what I was taught in the Police Academy back then. LEO's don't always get updated training after being 10-8.
I dont cover the law..In fact, I tell the students, I am neither an Attorney or a LEO..IF they want to know when, where, what is legal, then read the 790 statutes and/or consult an Attorney. They are adults and it is THEIR responsibility to educate themselves on the legal aspects of Deadly Force. I focus on the knowledge, skills and attitude needed to survive and win on the street..While I appreciate the idea, that would not be ideal since most instructors aren't lawyers. And occasionally I would still get asked advise by friends and I continued to tell the '3 step' method as I was taught that. I no longer have my statutes book but I do still have my manuals from the academy. When I'm home on R&R in Nov I'll try to look it up. I'm sure if we were taught that then it must have been in writing somewhere. I'll look and try to copy it and post it. I'm writing it in my notebook I keep to remind myself of things to do. I'll have something one way or the other the end of the first week of Nov.That's scary, Gold, as that has never been a statute on the books in FL.
