Carry Permit confiscation

Hi all,
I am new to the forum, so I hope this question is in the right place.
A person I know from work had to defend himself from 3 attackers.
He shot at one of them after they beat him with a steel pipe.
The police confiscated his firearm and his Carry permit. I understand taking the firearm, but is it normal for the police to confiscate your permit? It has been about 2 months and he still does not have it back.
Thanks for any info on this.

JSO likes to do their own shooting of BGs.

Maybe they didn't want any competition.
Now, THAT's funny!
Very odd.
I would DEFINITELY get a lawyer in on this. I think it's a bunch of garbage! You will be surprised what one phone call from a lawyer can do!

Another thing I would do if I were him is write a nice letter to the NRA. I'm sure they would LOVE to hear about this one!

Yes but also really serious. JSO shot something like 26 last year.

So? That's way less than the bag limit. :rolf
Don't you mean the dirt bag limit? :D
Something is strange about all of this.

In Pinellas County you could go here: http://www.pinellascounty.org/public_records.htm and look it up. Maybe the county he was arrested in has the same kind of system?

What's YOUR POINT??

I will agree up front that I wasn't present at each and every shooting BUT you seem to have a "CHUBBY" on for the very people who are protecting you.

I am of the opinion that despite the T-U article, all of the shootings have to be examined individually on thier own merits or lack thereof not as a whole.

So if you are of the opinon that the JSO has hunting licenses and that there is some sort of "bag limit" you are wrong!!

These guys were criminals and tried or did shoot at the JSO!!

They certaiinly didn't have CWP's we know that!!
I didn't read it that way and am very sympathetic to the Police.

A sense of humor, even about tragic things, is important to maintain balance. People have a right to be critical of LEOs and, sometimes, it is justified. Usually, it is not.

If you are a LEO (and I was), lighten up or it will eat you up. There was no personal or viscious stuff in his post that I saw.:drinks

They aren't protecting me, my M&P is protecting me. If they "protected" me, I would not need a gun :D

You must not have paid attention. The problem is that several of them were not armed. Therefore they did not shoot at or attempt to shoot at police.

I'm not sure what a "CHUBBY" is.

Where did I say that they had a hunting license? Where did I say that they had a quota? I don't have any problems with the JSO shootings. I'm a big fan of the Police so I don't know where you got your negative impression of me. Perhaps you just didn't understand the humor involved.

FYI - I spent 6 years as a reserve officer for JSO in the past and I was a Military Police. I know what it is like to wear the badge.
One thing: Did the police officer suspect the license to be a fake?
A FCIC check will confirm the status of the license.

Paladin:

No I am not a police officer.

Well it may be a matter of my interpretation but in my assessment it didn't seem so.

My intention wasn't to start a firestorm here but it was to suggest that (as you know -JSO Reserve Officer) there are some issues that aren't too funny.

In my assessment it is too bad that 26 people did loose their lives.
But none of us will want to find ourselves in the position each of these officers are in--wondering what the outcome will be on a decision we made without 1/10th of the training and experience they have.

So I'm done and moved on--Beer for everyone.
It's all good, JSwan724....Welcome to the forum.

Paladin is a good man, and has a unique perspective..considering what he's done, and what he does now. His comment was mostly in jest. I've worn a badge myself...trust me....the jokes we make here are NOTHING compared to the jokes the officers are making in the locker room.

Stick around...it's a nice place here. :drinks

No hard feelings.

LEOs have to make split second decisions that most people couldn't make with 6 months to think about it.
Any update on this?
Been on vacation for 2 weeks. I got an update last night at work.
The DA's office said it was self-defense and no charges are pending.
His lawyer got his permit and his gun back. He said his lawyer told him that JSO said it was normal practice for them to confiscate the permit along with the gun.
Thanks for all the feedback on this subject.
What did his lawyer say to the JSO? It sounds as if their normal practice is illegal.
