I know the places that the State says you can't carry, but I can't seem to find any clarity on carrying on a U.S. Military base. Anyone have any insight?

it depends on the commander of the base/post to decide if you can carry a firearm on the base/post. I believe however, that most (by policy) do not let you.

That being said, if the commander lets you, there is no law making it illegal.

Every base I've been to, it was unauthorized (illegal). In fact, it had to be unloaded and stored separate from your ammo.

no...not real sure why you would want too...lol i go on base everyday and i have no reason to think i would want/have to carry, but i can see the dilemma on having to go on base real quik and not having anywhere to put it. so i can see the question but IMO i would just say dont try. Just think if they were to find it on you when your not supposed to have it:smack.

If you want to carry on a military base, you just have to tell the sentries the secret code...Allah Akbar. Just make sure your affairs are in order first. :rolf

Thanks Guys. The reason that I ask is this. I would have no reason to intentionally carry concealed on a Military base, but several weeks ago a strange thing happened to me and the Mrs.

Case 1. We were going to visit my youngest son at Pensacola NAS for his birthday. We had our truck and our 24' camper in tow. We were heading for a KOA just barely over the Alabama boarder, and we were supposed to stay on 98W all the way to the border. Unfortunately, the 98 road signs in Pensacola are pretty difficult to see, much less follow, and we inadvertently ended up at the East gate of the NAS. Now, my truck has a DOD sticker from our local Navy Base on the windshield, and as we approached the MP at the gate I held up my DL and my CAC card, and the MP just waived us on through. I stopped anyway and informed the MP that we had missed our turn, and needed to find out how to get back on to 98W. He gave me directions through the base on how to get out of the other side and back on 98. So here we are, camper in tow, with a loaded G19 in the console. Fortunately, nothing happened and we made it off base with no problems.

Case 2. Tyndall AFB is on the east side of our county, and 98 East runs right through it over to Gulf county, where I fish and shoot a lot. There are no checkpoints on Tyndall for normal travelers on 98 going either direction, but the area is still patrolled by the base Police on 98, even in the "unsecured" stretch heading toward Gulf county. There is hunting allowed on Tyndall's reservation with the appropriate permits. If I'm traveling down an unsecured road through a Military reservation, am I subject to arrest if I'm stopped and they find a weapon in my vehicle?

IANAL, but I would think that you would not be subject to arrest on a public highway, in much the same way that tribal police can't arrest you for CCW on a public highway through tribal lands.

What DeD said, concerning case 2.

In case one, I know EXACTLY what/where you're talking about. If you'd gotten stopped, however, you could have been hosed, unfortunately.

Whew!!! Glad the guy liked my high-and-tight! I'll have to remember to stop before I get to a gate and lock it, unloaded and disabled, in the truck bed tool box.

Oooowweeee, you were lucky... I worked as a civilian for the Air Force, and still frequent Marine Corp Air Station, Beaufort, South Carolina...as well as Parris Island, South Carolina....policy is, with no exceptions...
No firearms on you or in the vehicle, period. Unloaded, dis-assembled, in the camper, locked up, doesn't matter, you would be taken in cuffed, weapon(s) confiscated, and you start talking for your life from there. What happens from there I can't say, but trust me, they don't want civilians there with firearms. In fact six US Marines keep their personal firearms at my home nearby because the procedure for bringing them on to and off of base is cumbersome, even for active Marines. I caught hell for having my holster on (see avatar) and was asked where the weapon was from that holster. Military Law is a funny thing compared to our world, the rules don't bend very easy.

Thanks, Joe. Next time I'll hang a U-ey in the middle of the road, pi--ing off everyone else if need be, rather than accidentally driving on base with a weapon.

You got that right. I have a friend that got a ticket on a military base and had to go to federal court for it (him being a civilian on a military installation is what did it).

Another little "military" story...

In the mid eighties I was working as a civilian at Hickam Air Force Base, Oahu, Hawaii. Senior pipefitter/plumber on base, full clearance to senior officers' housing, drank with the higher ups watching NFL Sunday football at their homes on base. Basically known and liked by all of importance on base.
Ferdinand Marcos decides to pay Hawaii a visit. Of course his private plane lands at Hickam, but no alert was issued.
Lunchtime came and I was walking up the sidewalk to a little deli on base, and in a split second two twentysomething MPs had the end of their rifle barrels buried into each side of my neck. Damn near lifted me like I was barbecue meat. I was told to put my hands out flat, fingers spread. Utility knife was taken from my pocket and I was escorted back to Base Command, where, fortunately, the Base CO saw me and relieved the MP's. The marks in my neck stayed for over a month, black and blue. Maybe a month later I was drinking in the NCO club on base and two "kids" walk up to me. They bought me a beer and quietly apologized for the treatment they gave me cause a foreign person of power was on base, but, as they said, "this is the military and that's how we work". Good thing I was well liked on base!
Yup, I would turn my rig around and piss everybody off, my neck hurts remembering that day.
Really wanna piss off MP's? Get caught on base with no insurance card....
Man they hate the paperwork involved with that infraction. That one just pisses them off, they will make you miserable for making them miserable, and ya can't do a damn thing about it.

It's exactly as Milkman says. EVERY base I go to says absolutely NO firearms. None. Zilch. Even active duty have to declare theirs at the gate, and take them straight to the armory and have them locked up with the military weapons. They especially don't want civilians having them. And don't forget the base property starts back way before the gate. In an honest mistake they might just turn you around but it could end up worse. In ur second scenario I had looked it up before and if a state/Fed road goes through a military base, then those rules don't apply on the road. It wouldn't be prudent to make people travel all the way around but I still would not have it on my person for that stretch. Play it extra safe with the military.
On another note me and one of my buddies went out hanging one day and we decided to go into a bar for a couple drinks so I leave my piece under the passenger seat in his truck as I was riding with him. Later I get dropped off and forget to grab it. I knew we were going to meet up for lunch the next day so I figured I would grab it then. That particular morning he had to go do a job on the military base (NAS Pensacola). As he approaches the gate he starts to slow down and hits his break and the piece slide out from under the seat and is now in the middle of the floor board on passenger side. He sees it but now the guard is waving him forward. He's an American now but was from Vietnam so thinks he will get locked up for sure. When the guard starts talking to him he is sweating and super nervous thinking he's going to be locked up forever. At this point he is so nervous his English goes out the window and he's answering in Vietnamese which I'm sure doesn't help and makes him even more nervous. Now what normally takes him a couple of seconds is taking forever because he's screwing everything up and doing his best not to look over at the glock19 in the middle of the floorboard. He is eventually let through without the piece being seen but boy did I get an a$$ chewing in a couple different languages later. :rolf Kids, don't try this on you buddies ! (unless you want a good laugh at their expense)

Well, yes...actually I am glad you "asked".....

I was at Marine Corp Air Station, Beaufort, last year, emptying out their ice machines for a barbecue at my house.(more on clipping their beer ice later)
An MP comes down the hall absolutely fuming mad. Well this young Marine is sooooo pissed cause it's almost the end of his shift and he just bagged a a guy running a stop sign on base, with no insurance card! Now he has hours of follow up with local LEO's, and he swears the guy will be handed off to the next shift even after all the work is done just to bust his bal*s for making the young Marine late for a Sunday cookout. This young Marine is pacing the hall, swear words are flying out of his mouth, and he sees me rolling two big coolers of ice out. He tells me.."looks like you are gonna have some fun", and looks even more mad. So I leave and head for home...prime and start the bonfire in the horse pasture, start the big grill, beer kegs iced down and pickup trucks start rolling in my pasture gate. We were holding Marine Appreciation Day, my wife and I buy 4kegs, 400 burgers and 400 hot dogs, free to Marines, and in came the young mad Marine and told me the whole story about insurance cards. I made sure he had his "fill" until 6AM the next day since our parties go all night till Sunday AM, and I asked my wife to go online and print new updated insurance cards for our vehicles. Now you know how I know!:D
