I finally got my CCW but i still have some questions. Does my CCW only apply to guns or are other weapons included under my ccw? Am I allowed to carry:
1. large knives (more than 3" blade)?
2. More thank 2oz. of pepper sray?
3. Tasers (what kind)?
4. expandable baton?
5. sling shots?
6. OC gun?

You can carry all that stuff under state law, but pre-emption only applies to firearms (so far). Individual cities and counties are free to regulate or ban the carriage of all of those items, though few actually do.

For the purposes of this section, concealed weapons or concealed firearms are defined as a handgun, electronic weapon or device, tear gas gun, knife, or billie, but the term does not include a machine gun as defined in s. 790.001(9).

You need to leave your slingshot at home.

Yup. Can be carried openly, though.

First, welcome to the forum.

I agree with the replies, but before you carry, read/study the governing statute. As you will find, we have a bunch of very knowledgeable and super helpful members here, but do yourself a favor and know what you can and can't do when it comes to compliance with the law governing CC (so-and-so told me, isn't a sound approach IMO); don't depend on others for your education.

Isn't the "sling shot" a kid's toy which propels a stone thru a "Y" using rubber tubing for launching (like in the Dennis the Menace comic strip), whereas the "slungshot" in the Statute refers to a "blackjack" type instrument which is a springy leather strap weighted at one end for knocking someone on the head?

I think the sling shot would be fine, but leave the blackjack at home...but then I'm not an attorney and may be talking out my arse...

Blackjack = Billie
Slungshot = Weighted objects on the end of a tether or rocks in a sock or something along those lines. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slungshot

I'm joking but...

I don't see slingshot on this list...

790.53(2) A person may openly carry, for purposes of lawful self-defense:
(a) A self-defense chemical spray.
(b) A nonlethal stun gun or dart-firing stun gun or other nonlethal electric weapon or device that is designed solely for defensive purposes.

Slugshot as defined by 790.001 (12) “Slungshot” means a small mass of metal, stone, sand, or similar material fixed on a flexible handle, strap, or the like, used as a weapon.

I have never read any statute that says one cannot carry slungshot. Only that one cannot manufacturer or sell it within this state, or carry it concealed without a cwfl.

Please note that the only thing prohibited from open carry are firearms. That which is not specifically prohibited by law (illegal) is therefor legal by default. There is no statute that allows me to wear blue jeans on Wednesdays, yet here I am wearing blue jeans on Wednesday without fear of being arrested! :grin

That's what I thought too... Same with monkey fists if I'm not mistaken

Nope. They're firearms. Can't CC 'machine guns' either.

That was more for the viewing audience than for you, TII. You know more about this stuff than I do.

I just find it strange that a statute; 790.53, entitled Open Carrying of Weapons, would address firearms (which are not weapons) and provide an exception for a "self-defense chemical spray" which was not prohibited by the statute to begin with.

Nothing the legislature does surprises me any longer. Have been witness to the sausage making process, and it isn't pretty.

This is one of the few cases in law where the statutes actually tell you that you CAN do something rather than what you can't (well, the statute does that, too).
