OK, OK, I know....it's blasphemy, sheer blasphemy to say what I'm about to say. But here goes..................

I'm giving up my Glock. :smack :smack :smack;

I've lost about 25 pounds since carrying my last G19 concealed. I'm down to about 150 or so now. Now that I received my license in the mail last week, I have found that carrying my G19 IWB at 3:30 position is downright painful. I've got no butt, no love-handles, and no hips anymore, so the fat as hell Glock just digs into my bones when carrying.

Two months ago, Mrs. Hodawg expressed an interest in carrying, so after much searching we settled on a Taurus PT709 in 9mm for her. Very slim, great trigger pull, and after about 250 rounds at the range, very reliable and accurate. I was so impressed with it that I went and bought myself one, even though I already had the G19.

Long story short,............. I am a firm believer in the axiom "You will fight as you are trained"... I know that due to comfort and concealability issues, I will end up carrying the PT709 instead of the Glock. So just to set my own mind at ease, I took My 709 to the range yesterday. I put about 250 rounds of 115 gr. Remington FMJ's through it. I went through two handed accuracy drills, strong hand and weak hand drills, rapid fire, head shots at 15 meters. Then I plugged about 25 rounds of 147 Hydra-Shocks at very rapid fire, trying to make it jam. It didn't. As a matter of fact, the little bugger shot better with the Hydra-Shocks than it did with the range ammo.

At the ranges that I will use a defensive pistol, since I'm not an LEO anymore, the PT709 is just as accurate (for me anyways) as the G19. And a HECK of a lot more comfortable to carry. I know that I'm loosing about 50% capacity, but I find that I can carry an extra magazine in the off side pocket that is hardly noticed.

OK, I'm ready for all of the Glocksters to just pound me :smack , and I know that the PT709 doesn't carry the reputation as a Glock, an XD, a Kimber, and others,................ but it works for me. Better to have my 709 on my hip than a G19 left at home.

Beers y'all, Let the flogging begin ! :dancingbanana

Ken, I hear ya!
I spent about three hours at the Ft Walton gun show yesterday trying to convince myself that I should sell my PF-9 and get a glock or 24/7 compact. I've been toying with the idea of a .40 or .45. But the fact remains, I'm a smaller guy and the PF-9 can conceal very easily. I always have it when I leave home. I carry IWB, OWB, pocket, and even SmartCarry when wearing certain attire. So after 3 hours of handling thousands of dollars in weapons.... I walked out with a new holster, an extra mag carrier, and some more Sabre for the wife.

I hope the Glock folks go easy on ya... :deadhorse

Oh, you are dead meat, Ken! Flogged until there is no meat at all left on your bones.:rolf

Heck, I may as well take some of the lashes for you. I have a G19 and a G26. For comfort of carry, the Sig revolution compact 45 or the Witness 40 S&W compact suits me better. Simply because they are thinner. For we thinner people, there is a lot to be said for a thin weapon. Both of the thin weapons I mentioned are heavier than the Glocks, but, for me, the weight is not what counts, it is the slimness of the weapon that matters most for comfort.

There, no doubt I have deflected some the flogging blows from you to my own rump. Remember that next time I say something stupid, Ken.

Ok....Glock Guy here....(well, mostly)

I see no need for a flogging, here, Ken. You've made a conscious decision based upon your specific needs. You've chosen a weapon with which you are happy, feel is reliable enough to bet your life on, and shoot well enough to satisfy you.

I see no downside here. As long as you have confidence in your choice, who the heck is anyone to tell you different?

Carry it with pride, sir! :thumsup

I agree with you Rvrctyrngr 100% :thumsupI like to have what I am comfortable with..not what someone else says.. When I had a carry license years ago I used to have a S&W chiefs special on my ankle and a S&W 686 357 6" on my side. I was younger and also had a different attitude back then.
Now the novelty and strangeness of carrying a weapon as a non- LEO out in the public doesnt affect me anymore.I just want something that I feel confident and comfortable with..I would like to carry my 12ga on one of those backholster things:rolf but it's not practical nor legal nor wise.My son carries this XD 45 jamed in some IWB holster,He likes it.. But it looks so uncomfortable...to be lugging around..very affective, but I know I wouldn't like it.(of coarse if he gave it to me I would take it!):dancingbanana
The way I(for myself) look at it...after reseaching all the pros and cons of a particular type and caliber..by the experts... Its my decision.....right or wrong, good or bad..not someone elses..

Good for you! Being on the thin side myself, I've found IWB to not be very comfortable. I can carry my 3" Kimber in a Crossbreed Supertuck as long as I'm up and moving, but as soon as I sit down, forget it. Smartcarry works well under shorts and a t-shirt, and I carry OWB mostly every other time.

Enjoy your new purchase and congrats on losing the extra weight!

Lite beers for you!:drinks

FYI....nice review of the Taurus 709 in the new Combat Handguns by Dave Spaulding.

Forgot to ask, Hodawg...what are the chances of comparison pics with your G19? Haven't seen the 709 yet (I'm scared to go into gun shops these days. :D).

Good job Ken
Even with age, experience and wisdom you managed to p**s off almost all the members here.
As you know, when you buy a Glock it is a life altering decision; think cult. Once in, like the Masons, you're in for life. Worse, you talk heresy about "the gun" and then say you prefer the lowly Taurus. They will find you.
Next you tell us you can't carry "the gun" anymore because you lost twenty five pounds and no longer have love handles, a rear or hips. So far you've managed to anger almost all our members. Now if you could just figure out how to work the women, jews and black folks into your post you will have hit the trifecta (sp?). Everybody will be mad at you.
By the way, I had a Taurus PT145 and it was a great gun. I think Taurus is way under rated.
Lost weight, got license and new gun...life is good!
Best regards
Franklin :rolf

I'm on the small and thin side too, 5' 6" 140 lbs. I sold my S & W model 19-3 .357 mag. 6" barrel and carry a Kel-Tec P-32 iwb. The grip sits parallel and inside my belt either at appendix or 4:00. I just bought a new Kel-Tec P-11 9mm that I should be able to carry iwb with the right belt and holster combo.
I'm itching to take it to the range and give it a workout. Practicing with snap caps, it seems to have a smoother trigger than the P-32.

Hodawg,

Carrying anything but what you are comfortable with seems at odds with nature to begin with. Everyone is different where that subject is concerned, it's why they make so many different gun models right? :thumsup

Now as to the loss of weight, Franklin is right, :smack

I totaly agree with your last statement so you will not be pounded on by me. I would like to ask you what holster did you use with the G19 as that may have added to the discomfort.

The best gun for you is the one you will carry. A gun left at home doesn't do you any good.

As for me I'm ready to give up my Taurus PT40 MilPro and get an M&P40c.

Sometime in the next two weeks that will be my EDC if all goes well.

Opened the gun safe...bent down and explained to the Big Glocks...they in turn explained to the Baby Glocks....they all agree you should be comfortable and wish you the best with your new gun. I, on the opposite of you, have gained thirty pounds and when the kids go to sleep my wife will look for my missing G36 in my belly fat....:rolf
Enjoy and carry with confidence.
