No, not another thread about what gun to get. I am very set into what to get... question now: What is the best price?

I set my mind to replace my aging Sig 229 (no rail, .40 and Sig357) with a brand new Sig 229 SAS two tone in .40. In part because my accessories would fit, and in part I like and trust the gun. The old one is getting "worn out". I got it well used about 2 or so years ago and have shot a few thousand rounds through it.

Now Sig isn't a cheap price. The particular gun I am looking for as an MSRP for $1,126. I have seen it on gunbroker in the $850-900 range. I just stopped by Shooters in Jacksonville. They don't have it in stock but are willing to order it for $929 (maybe $900). So the Shooters price isn't bad, but could it be lower? Given that it is a "sure sale"?

(FWIW: Shooters has a pretty good selection, but no Sig 229s without rail at all.. what is it about handguns and rails anyway?)

I'll save you some phone calls, Shooters has the best prices of all the shops in the beach area (Shooters, Gun Gallery and Bullseye). The only other shop in Jax I can think of is Wild West and I've never been there so not sure what the price differential is between them and Shooters.

there is a new academy sports on atlantic at kernan with a large gun dept. and there is JAX tactical in Jax Beach, gander mtn has sigs as well
there is a gun shop in st aug on 16 about 3 miles east of 95 that has a good selection and decent people working there

I find Wild West to be reasonable.

My friend bought a refurb Sig for $615 from St Nicks Gunshop on Blanding. It might have been a 229. Call them. Very knowledgeable but sort of expensive in general. Used and refurbs are nicely priced.

If you don't mind used check Bullseye Guns. They take 20% off used guns. They're good people. Extremely honest!

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I will certainly call around. In the past I have dealt with Gun Gallery (very nice people, a bit expensive) and Shooters (usually best prices, staff is mixed). Only used the range at Bullseye and didn't like the staff there but will give them a chance. Thanks for pointers to the other shops I haven't heard about. I want to get this one new, not used. I got the old one used from Gun Gallery and am overall happy with it, but well, it is time to move on and get one where I know what the history of each little scratch is.

(oh... and pending spousal approval... hopefully I will soon have some pics of a new toy to post :) )

I stand corrected, I didn't know about the shop on Atlantic and Kernan and somehow forgot about JAX tactical which is definately a good call.

For the OP, There's also a shop in Yulee off of 17. I can't remember the name but my friend uses them and he always gets a good deal on his purchases. Might want to give them a try too.

Take your best price to Jax Tactical, small shop, great people, ask for Larry, bet he'll beat the price.
Beautiful gun by the way.

Well, you're here so you have a computer.
I'd check "Top Gun Supply"
and "Bud's Gun Shop"
and have it sent to a local FFL.
No sales tax, way better price than you'll find locally.

Also, Gunbroker.com is a good source for new guns too.

Just saw this one. 357/40 barrels. Only hesitation is that he just joined:

Have to check JaxTactical. Made a couple phone calls today and looks like the exact model I want is actually not available right now from any of the resellers :(. i think the black one is available but not the two-tone. For the money I am going to spend on this, I want to get exactly what I want, not 80 or 90% of it. There is one on Gunbroker, but getting all the transfer and such worked out with my travel schedule will be tricky.

I called a couple of the local places without success. Even used e-mail (only one responded at all). But nobody could get me the exact model I wanted. So I broke down and went the Internet route. First I did gunbroker, but after using the "buy now" option, the dealer didn't honer the deal due to an "inventory mismatch". They had a disclaimer stating that this may happen as they also have a physical store. So I went on the search again, and finally found one at a good price at Top Gun Supply. Ended up costing me around $870 (shipping USPS Priority). I used "Reload 1" as a receiving FFL. They are closest to me and no need to use one of the regular stores. Everything went very smooth. I had to go out of town for work, so I wasn't able to pick it up until today. If you are into reloading btw... Reload-1 seems to be the place to get equipment and parts in Jacksonville.

First impression of the Sig 229 "Gen2 SAS two-tone":

The "shiny slide" does exactly what I want it to do. Right now, it is dusk here with heavy rain and I can clearly make it out in the dim light in the room. This was the main reason why I went with two-tone. Yes, it has night sights, but for SD I am looking at quick "point shooting" rather then lining up sights.

The slide feels a bit "gritty" as I move it back and forth compared to the old one. Not a problem, just odd and maybe one of those things that will work itself out over time.

The trigger is significantly different. I am not sure I like it over the old one. May need a bit time to get used to . The new trigger is very "skinny" compared to the old one. It requires a bit less reach I think which is nice, but I got a couple of times my finger pinched a bit behind it while dry firing.

So far I am happy! Have to wait for the range to come up with a final decission.

(someone already asked: the old Sig 229 may eventually go for sale here. But I first need to make sure the new one works well)

Took it out to the range yesterday! I am going to the Gateway Rifle and Pistol club here in Jacksonville, so I was able to put it through its paces. The first magazine was horribly inaccurate. I am not sure if it was me or the gun. But later, it got a lot better. I am not sure if it just needed a bit "breaking in" or if I needed breaking in with it.

The trigger feels a bit different then the old one. I think the short reset trigger part works a tad better on the new 229 then my old one (the old one was retrofitted with it by Sig). I shot about 300 rounds of various types (HST and Winchester Ranger hollow points, Federal and Speer FMJ). Not a single hickup. I did rapid fire, slow, while moving, a lot of drawing from the holster.

So far I don't see any peening on the slide as some have reported. I only shot .40 and haven't tried my .22 conversion kit with it yet, or the .357 Sig barrel I have. The main goal was to make sure it is reliably functioning "as intended". The only issue I ran into is that the slide does not always lock open after the last round if I use the old Sig magazines. But it works fine with the newer magazines supplied with the gun. The magazines where very "stiff" at first making it almost impossible to load all 12 rounds. But they already loosened up a bit. The old once load a lot easier. I did most of the shooting with the new magazines, but even the old once fed fine.

So overall: I am very happy with the new one. The old one will go up for sale shortly (figuring out a price and such)

i cant get past that first statement that your Sig is "wearing out" after a few thousand rounds.....? did you get one with rail this time? How many rounds was that? Sounds like your old mags need new springs. Admit it you just wanted to get a new gun......:grin
