At the beach

Seeing how many here, maybe most live in the sunshine state, lets try this one

You've gone to the beach with your significant other [ SO ], it's fairly crowded on a holiday weekend. You've undressed from your street clothes to your swimming trunk, laid your towels out, placed your phone, wallet, handgun and other hidden from passerby's on the beach. Your SO will stay at the towel location and watch the valuables while you take a dip, then you'll let her do the same while you watch the valuables and enjoy the beautiful day.

You're in the water up to your waist, when out of nowhere, a seemingly crazy liberal wokester about 20 is charging people with a large kitchen butchers knife. You see he's injured a few at the shore line already as he looks up and directly at you, then starts wading into the water doing a B line to you.

What do you do?

"Ruth, I direct your attention to the psycho with the butcher knife!!!".

She can run anything I might be carrying.

Tell the wife to run to truck, take a deep breath, go under and swim away. I can swim about 100yds under water on a single breath. When I pop up he should have no idea where I’m at.
Used to take a pistol in a ziploc bag and put it under my towel. Don’t do that anymore. I carry on my brother in laws boat but not at beach anymore.

That would be a very odd thing for a bad guy to do... go after the most difficult target (in the water) rather than more easy pickings on the beach.

Honestly... if he's coming out into the surf with a knife in his hand, looking at me, I'm going to do my best Mark Spitz impression and haul a$$ away from him. No way he can keep up with me (swimming with a knife in one hand). I'd swim parallel to the shore. If he's still coming after me, I'll easily be able to make some space down the beach and make it back to the shore and back to my gear before he can get back to the beach.

Come get me….I’d turn and swim for deeper water. I’m very comfortable in the water and could play “Marco Polo“ with him till the cops arrived or he got tired and drowned.

At least we’d both have a knife. I have always clipped an older less expensive folder on my suit so I‘d not risk losing my Benchmade. He might have a large kitchen knife but my 4” folder would be good enough for me under the water. He’d never see it if he got that close. ;)

A quick couple handfuls of sand in the face does wonders to bully's, then you may escape or give him a can of whoop- a## until the Police arrive.

I'll move to deep water up to my chest and smile at him [ that will slow him down further getting to me ]. When he gets to within 5 feet or so, open up with the NAA 22mag PUG. I have the gun with a few purposes in mind.

Have it on me when I couldn't/wouldn't normally have one like swimming and as a primary carried in my hand walking across parking lots etc where someone could jump out from behind parked cars and not give me much time to draw the normal primary.

If I lived in Utah I would spend more time at the beach than I do here ......especially on the ocean side of the state.

Just got back from visiting my mom across the state , but my answer mirrors joecarry, racer, and yours; I'm heading to deeper water that I'm confident he won't easily pursue me with a knife in hand. And he won't like saying hello to my little friend clipped to my board shorts [inexpensive folder] or the hand full of sand to his face if he gets close, which is unlikely! I'm a pretty good swimmer and a graduate of multiple "drownproofing" and water survival courses, one in college and another 6 or 7 compliments of the USN over three plus decades of my career.

He's a liberal wokester so he's a *****...I charge toward him and when I get close I start a huge amount of splashing directly at him to throw him off his game...me coming toward him is going make him believe I'm crazier than he is and the deluge of water is going give him second thoughts as he becomes disoriented and blinded...all I want is control if the knife arm/hand...I'm not a swimmer so I want this in as shallow water as possible so I can fight like the third monkey at Noah's ark...

Fast surface dive, alter course, and like 7.62, pop up somewhere a safe distance away. Quick couple of breaths and repeat as necessary. Wokester will drown looking for me.

We don’t “do” public beaches. We swim from our boat.

If I was in the above situation I’d take off my sunscreen shirt, load both hands with wet sand from the bottom and throw it forcefully into the BG’s eyes at the right time; then take him out, using my shirt as a flexible weapon if needed.

2nd If: If I was a beachgoer; I’d have one of those plastic/composite fixed blades in my beach kit.

Not to brag, but I'm an extremely good swimmer -- former lifeguard, former water safety instructor, former competitive swimmer... even taught a few of those water survival courses that BeerHunter mentioned. I'm luring him into deeper water, and then I'll decide if I want to take him on there, or leave him behind while I get to shore.

And every time you pop up, say "MARCO!"

I’ve scubaed, snorkeled and swam in SoFla waters all my life. More comfy going out and as deep as need be. No worries.
There have been times when I’ve been 1/4-1/2 mile off shore doing a shore dive with either a snorkel, floating lung or full scuba gear. This situation I’m winning. He’d better hope I don’t have a pole spear or spear gun or he’s getting stuck!

Take his azz to deeper water. If he makes the mistake to follow, systematically start to slash his legs ( quads, hamstrings, Achilles ) / bottoms of feet, with my spiderco pacific salt, from below. This is exactly why I got this specific knife. I spend most of my off time on or in the water & this knife is made for that. I take it swimming and diving & don’t even have to rinse it off, it is impervious to salt water. I was just thinking about doing a follow up to my post of when I got it a few years back & say how it has held up absolutely phenomenal! Just a solid a lockup & no blade play, as the day I got it. I’m going to look for another one, just to have a backup. I like my Benchmade & my SOG, but I luv this Spiderco Pacific Salt!

I have repeatedly told all my family that if in extreme danger and close to water, get in the water. To me, an open body of water offers so many advantages for evade and escape. And yes, even in FL I’d take my chances with the possible gator over the higher probability of getting shot or stabbed on land if I can’t outrun the person.

I too am extremely comfortable in the water. we used to swim across the coves at Lake Mead when I was a kid, many people used to die this way out there, it’s a deadly lake, but we never gave it much thought as we swam so much. Spent my summers swimming all day in grandparents pool. I used to be able and swim a mile not that long ago, can rest and float on my back, etc.

Interesting fact: Bullets can’t penetrate past 4 feet of water, no matter the caliber, as proven by Mythbusters.

That's total B.S.

I'm pretty sure those bullets will sink all the way to the bottom! :p
